Marcus was good. In the end it was Scotland 20 - Marcus Smith
17. Though he wasn't used that much with others being first and
second receiver. As a Scot I was glad this was the case. He
always looked dangerous when running like he does for Quins.
Strange decision to bring him off. IMHO

Had we taken someone off to bring a hooker on at a line-out, it
would be a replacement.
That is, they could not come back on at the end of the yellow
card - but we could have brought a different back row forward on
for LCD.
Why we had to go for a trick throw and not a simple front lift,
I do not know.

That was a good game of rugby against the best Scotland team
that’s been around for a while, possibly a number of decades.
England’s control of the game (for the first 65 minutes) was
really impressive, as was Scotland’s defence. The yellow card
period ultimately decided the game; Jones circled the wagons
after the game but that was a droppable offence from LCD.
Thought Englands pack played very well (despite absences) and
were unfortunate to be on the losing side. Ludlam really
impressed me, maybe he stays, and Lawes plays alongside Maro?
Blessed with depth there and more than controlled the game well
enough to win. But somehow, we didn’t.
Part of that was a well drilled Scotland defence that kept
England infront of them and took away the kickpass (apart from
one time where Marcus didn’t execute well enough) and short
range kicking game and kept us going side to side. This is
partly due to good defensive game planning from Tandy and
Townsend but also due to selection.
Whatever it is that Jones and Gleeson are trying to do clearly
involves more directness in the backs to keep the D honest than
was happening. Daly is never going to provide that and Marchant
and Malins don’t either. You can’t rely on Tuilagi for anything
at the moment. This is a problem going into the world cup;
Atkinson is that direct threat but not as good an all round
player. Manu is injured all the time. We learned year that Ollie
Lawrence isn’t it either. There’s no optimal answer and England
need to find one.
The two times Scotland had a sniff, they were clinical. Russell
is a star and his last 20 mins won them the match, essentially.
Marcus has to aspire to that level of game management. He has
more raw talent, the rest comes with experience, and today was a
good example of why that matters. I don’t think he played that
well, despite not doing that badly either. At his best, he makes
that crosskick and doesn’t miss that long touch. But did leave
the field with England in control at 17-10. Needs to be in the
game in that situation and removing him was a mistake. That
said, you could argue that great players make things happen.
Russell had scraps all day and got out with a win. Marcus had
66% territory and possession and only had 17 points. He’s
talented, but still has a way to go.
Wasn’t a game for Dombrandt today really. I like the idea of
playing both him and Simmonds next week. Marchant won’t want to
see their first try again, but suspect he’ll learn from it and
move on. Jones will probably pick a faster player there next
week as he didn’t offer a lot else and they’ll fancy themselves
vs Italy. Marler was solid, and put in a tough spot in that 5m
lineout situation.
That said, they almost got out with a win against a very good
Scotland side. This is an England team in transition, still
finding its identity in attack and 3rd-4th place feels about
right with tough games against very good Ireland and France
still to come, and games against Italy and the weakest Wales
side for some time which they should win. Don’t need to peak
until next year anyway.

To me the biggest problem is for years now at competitions,
we’ve bemoaned the “kicking it away” pointless game plan. Over
the last few 6 nations it’s always been the same moans. Yet when
the pressure off AIs are on, we sometimes showcase a bit of
running rugby. But then, EJ for some reason thinks the only way
to win competitions is the approach we took today, and nothing
else can be trusted. It’s that approach and mindset which is why
we won’t win anything meaningful under EJ again as he cannot
adapt.
His record shows he comes in and always has initial success, but
he dosent adapt with the changing times and is stubborn to
accept his wrong choices. The end result? We have lost 4 of our
last 6 six nations games.

Marchant had had to track across to cover full back while the
ball was the other side of the pitch. There was no time for him
to get back.

Not disagreeing really, but it's worth pointing out that Eddie's
been in charge of England for a very long time, longer than any
other major coaching job he's had. He had initial success, then
a dip, then things did change and he did adapt and England had
success again.
He's wasting time and talent with his current approach, he's
burned bridges with huge numbers of coaches and players, and
he's incredibly stubborn. His stone age approach to player
welfare costs us repeatedly. His negative approach to away games
is a consistent disappointment. His refusal to accept that
hundreds of caps doesn't mean Youngs and Farrell are still worth
their places is costing us time and time again.

Didn't know that if you brought George on in that situation it
counts as a full replacement, not temporary yellow card
replacement. Makes sense though. With only 15 mins left though,
why not just make the switch anyway. Just a lack of sense there
I don't judge lcd too harshly. Looked very blatant in slow mo
and he could have done better, but if he hadn't done it they'd
probably have scored and on another occasion he'd get away with
it. Silly, but we should have done far more in attack

He had to catch it, deliberately throwing the ball into touch,
even backwards, is a penalty.
But as others have said, why was he on his own there.
