Well if he couldn't have Farrell then Daly was a certainty.

Not as bad as I had feared....
Can't complain too much about Simmonds, the 2 8s are in
excellent form. Horses for courses.
Curry back at 7 is great, ludlam is quality in the prem, we'll
have to see how he goes when it steps up.
I'd have started Marler, but as he's been out with the lurgi he
may not be up to full speed.
Youngs 🙄 but expected
Daly! What? I guess it's another kicking option.....
Surprised not to see Atkinson tbh.

One thing about that back line is that they can all kick, and
several of them have huge boots. It increases the chance of a
50:22, which is likely to be important in the conditions

Pleased to see Isiekwe over Ewels too. Shame Ewels is still on
the bench, but given the injuries it's understandable

Although the 50-22 is a good spot, it also shows Eddie's intent
to kick the ball away.....again! Daly must have pictures of
Eddie (and Gatland) with goats to get selected to start but at
least he's in his best position.
If I'm the Scottish 8, I'm targeting the 10/12 channel as there
is no ballast there and as good as Marcus and Slade are at
getting their shoulders in, they can't do it for 80 minutes. If
they have a runner off their inside shoulder as well, they'll
trample all over Daly, expect to see DVDM in that role.
Will be a good test of Stewards last ditch defense.

I might be being optimistic but I don't necessarily see it as
his full intent to boot the thing away, more than Slade and Daly
have massive boots that could be utilised well in the
traditional Murrayfield dreadful conditions. The 50:22 is a
weapon that if you have someone that executes it effectively
could work well in grim conditions but I don't immediately think
of those 2 as kick merchants.

A 50:22 isn't kicking the ball away, though. It's essentially
kicking for space with the aim of at the least putting pressure
on the opposition and possibly recovering possession with an
attacking lineout inside the 22.
And the threat of it is sometimes more important than the
actuality. If having so many good kickers in the squad forces
Scotland to drop a wing back to cover the space, it means
there's more room for Marcus to weave his magic.

And then the critical questions arise: "Has Eddie given Marcus
the licence? Or are we going to see another rigid box kick -
chase - kick tennis gameplan with no freedom of expression?"

Did you watch the Boks game? I thought there was a decent amount
of freedom of expression in that.
I imagine Eddie will be coaching Marcus on being more selective
about when he takes his chances, because the risk/reward balance
in international rugby is different. But given how long he's
waited to bring him into the team, and what he's said about the
shift in the game towards playing more ball in hand, I've got no
expectation that we will see a rigid gameplan.
Marcus is there because defences are getting better at managing
multi-phase patterns of play, and he is the best player in
England (and arguably one of the best in the world) at
manipulating a defence within a single phase because he has so
many options and plays so close to the line. No point picking
him if you're not going to let him do that. And I strongly
suspect that if you do pick him, he's going to do it regardless
of what you tell him.

Yes...
Although isn't that why DC hasn't got more caps from EJ (if you
believe the rumours).
