England's Calcutta Cup Squad announced

JONES NAMES ENGLAND TEAM TO FACE SCOTLAND

England will travel to Edinburgh today as they continue
preparations for the Calcutta Cup tie on Saturday (4.45pm KO).
Tom Curry will captain England, with Luke Cowan-Dickie (hooker),
Ellis Genge (prop) and Henry Slade (inside centre) named as vice
captains. Ben Youngs is at scrum half, Marcus Smith is at fly
half and Elliot Daly is named at outside centre.
Joe Marchant has returned to the side after completing COVID
isolation protocols at left wing, with Max Malins on the right
wing and Freddie Steward at full back.
Kyle Sinckler starts at prop with Maro Itoje and Nick Isiekwe at
lock. Lewis Ludlam is blind-side flanker and Sam Simmonds is No.
8.
Jamie George, Joe Marler, Will Stuart, Charlie Ewels, Alex
Dombrandt, Harry Randall, George Ford and Jack Nowell are named
as finishers.
"As the first game, this match is hugely important to both sides
and we will both want to get off to a winning start," said
Jones.
"We have a good, young team but we understand the task ahead and
we’ll be ready to go after it from the first kick.
"Tom Curry will captain the side for this game and has the
respect of the team around him, in Owen and Courtney’s absence.
He also has the support of the vice captains and other leaders
in the team such as Maro Itoje and Ben Youngs.
"We have prepared really well for this game. We’ve had a number
of obstacles thrown at us, but we’ve overcome them as a more
together group and we’re looking forward to getting started."

That's a very strong bench - though I wish Eddie would give
Dombrandt a start.
Still, a good squad, with most players in their best positions
and a backline where every player in the the three quarter line
is creative and can cover at least two of the positions, which
could make for a lot of options in play. If Slade and Daly can
stand up to the more direct Scottish midfield, and the weather
doesn't reduce it to a scrumfest, there's the makings of a very
good game.

Moderately acceptable from EJ.
I personally would have Marchant/Malins the other way round.
As for Daly starting, I suppose his kicking element might
already show what game plan EJ wants.
Harsh on Dombrandt, but both Simmonds and Alex are in great form
so tough call. At least Simmonds will know he has to put in a
solid performance as Alex will be hot on his tails to start if
he doesn't perform, so that in itself is good for England as
complacency in positions often leads to poor performances.

Hmmm, surprised to see ludlam start, same with Daly and
surpirsed to see dombrandt on the bench, but no massive
complaints about simmonds starting.
13 should be Daly's best position, so let's hope he shows what
he can do

At least in attack, I don't think being on the left/right wing
makes any difference in the modern game. If the ball's going
wide to the right wing for example, you'll almost always see the
left winger coming around to try and overload the 13 channel,
and the right winger will do the same if the ball's going to the
left wing.
Obviously in defence the wingers will generally stay on their
wings, but afaik there's no real difference between defending on
the left wing and defending on the right wing.

Depends who gets the unenviable task of defending against Van
Der Merwe, then it makes a difference.

I know there's not been much between them but I do find it odd
that when Simmonds' form was red hot last year EJ had Dombrandt
in the 23 over him and now Dombrandt is arguably in slightly
better form than Simmonds, he puts Simmonds in!
Can't complain at all as they're both in excellent form.
Would have liked to have seen Marchant and Daly swapped over but
can't have everything. A very good looking team overall.

At least we have an actual 8 at 8! A fired up Dombrant off the
bench will run some tired legs ragged

As much as I want Dommers to succeed, I can see why he’s
starting with Simmonds: he is such a powerful short range runner
and when the game is tight in the first 50-60 minutes, it will
suit his game; Dommers coming on when/if game opens up will be
his opportunity to show how good he is in the loose (and in
turning over/tackling too)…
With injuries around, I can’t complain about that side. Daly
might be lucky, but he’s playing in his best position and his
England rugby career probably depends on him having a blinder…
