The Tuesday evening fixture has been on the Quins fixture list
for a while. I thought it was odd when updating my diary but now
it's confirmed

The semifinals and final are also midweek games. Too many games
this season and not enough weekends.

- I completely agree. The RFU should extract its digit &
implement more weekends in 2022 forthwith.

Next season if the expansion to 14 teams goes ahead, I foresee
one of two scenarios:
1) Either the Prem Cup or A-League/Shield/whatever they're
calling it this week will get dropped.
Or
2) The League is split into two conferences, similar to the Pro
14 last season. You play home & away against all the teams in
your conference, and home OR away against the teams in the other
conference. One other game is a Derby game, played against a
team in the other conference. If you played them at home in the
"regular" fixtures, you play them away in the Derby round. That
would total 20 games in the regular season. Playoffs would be
between the top four in each conference. Conf A P1 plays Conf B
P4 etc. Total of 23 weekends required. That would free up
weekends compared to the 28 weeks currently required.

Adding the 14th team doesn't make the league any longer than it
is this season, it just removes the 2 rest weeks that clubs have
this season. But having the Prem Cup in it's current format does
seem a bit daft when they have to resort to midweek games.

Yeah, that's why I quoted the current 28 weeks as a comparison.
We've also got to factor in that the current plan is for the SA
teams taking part in the "European" cup competitions next season
as well. That'll necessitate more changes to the format of that
competition as well.

Good point about Europe. Wonder if they will try and go back to
having pools of 4 teams with 6 games each?

That'll depend a lot on whether they want to revitalise the
third-level Shield competition for the likes of STM Enisei et
al.
There's 44 "top level" clubs due to play in next seasons'
European competition. You could take the top 24 (with maybe some
sort of geographical shenanigans in the "Celtic" league to
ensure representation from all countries), 6 pools of 4. Pool
winners & top 2 2nd places go into the quarters.
That would leave 20 teams for the Challenge Cup Given you want
this comp to take place at the same time as the Champions Cup,
you have 5 pools of 4 and the winners & top 3 runners up going
through to the knock-outs (I'm assuming no drop down from the
Champions cup for the other runners up there). The problem is
that this effectively cuts off the next level down from their
"day in the sun" against big names unless they pull four teams
from the lower level & make this a 24 team contest as well.
