Well let's not forget that Walsh was suspended for abusing a
player on a Lions tour and also started a confrontation with an
England coach during a world cup match. While I don't wish to
demean him for his alcoholism, he did show an incredible lack of
professionalism turning up at a sanzar conference still drunk
from the night before and it's not really a surprise the NZRU
washed their hands of him.
He was at times a technically excellent ref but it's hard to
shake the idea that he was swayed by emotion a little too often.

Yellow carding Skinner wasn't even Barnes' worst mistake in that
game. Not yellow carding Ben Youngs for an off the ball tackle
on Williams and possibly a penalty try near the end was the
nadir.
That's the only game I have ever seen where I will actually
blame the ref for us losing.

It was not his best day, certainly. A salutory reminder that
even the best refs can have an off day.
You can probably find one for pretty much anyone - this thread
has reminded me of Roman Poite, normally among the very best at
making the right call, being repeatedly conned by an Aussie
front row that danced sideways in unison like a flamin' chorus
line in the Eng v Aus game at RWC 2015.
That's one of the reasons why I always feel a ref should be open
to listening to the captains and willing to look for things they
draw out. I'm also in favour of the TMO being able to have a
quiet word to say "keep an eye on x" ahead of setpieces.

Reffing of the scrum has been in a bad place for a while, I
think. Yesterday I was gobsmacked watching a tighthead sink to
his knees and only to win the penalty a few seconds later.
Working out why it's so bad right now means working out when
scrums changed for the worst and that's complicated; my gut says
late 2000s/early 2010s.

Yes but Lander refereed as if he was drunk. At least Walsh had
an excuse!

Lander was a bit before I started following club rugby! I think
back then I was still reading what Stephen Jones had to say
about refs and treating it as fact (not sure there's an emoji
here that expresses enough shame for that one)
