What a game! Can we keep getting away with these types of
performances? I keep saying no, and the team keep saying yes. I
have a number of friends who support other Premiership sides -
but all to a man (and woman) say what a pleasure it is watching
Quins, and how lucky I am to be supporting them. I find it
difficult to argue, but I'm not sure how much longer my heart
can take the excitement!

OK. I can accept that the rotation probably contributed to us
being ‘disjointed’ last night. The trouble is, we’ve looked
similarly disjointed in almost every game this season without
the excuse of a lack familiarity.
I don’t want to be overly negative and I think it will click at
some point. As I said before I’d always prefer a winning team
with room for improvement to losing but playing well. However,
with the 6 Nations period upon us and our best players
unavailable, our ability to get out of jail is going to be
significantly reduced.
The fixture list is reasonably kind, but I just want us to
switch on a bit more.
I also think there’s a very big difference in wanting a bit of
improvement and slating the team as some (supporters?) regularly
do.

Very disjointed game. Ref really didn’t help. Very whistle happy
and didn’t get a lot right for both sides. Castres have a right
to be aggrieved and were one of the better sides we’ve played,
certainly the best prepared.
The good:
A win, five points, 36 points scored at home, a comeback from
being 13 points down after 10 mins and again after 20 and second
seed locked up. Eventually we'll lose one of these, but not
today.
Young pack stood up very well. The core of this side was missing
and the following were injured or rested: Walker, Louw, Symons,
Lewis, Lawday, Kenningham, Chisholm. Scrum was fine after marler
went off and we weren’t pushed around by a physically big team.
Nick David looks like he’s going to stick. Absolutely electric
and breaks a lot of tackles despite not being the biggest.
Two very good finishes from Dombrandt. The first one was a
proper wingers finish. The third try looked bad in real time but
he probably did get it down on replay. Looked over the line from
the south stand but dropped, but replay showed he had enough
control. Put the game on his shoulders in the last five minutes
and was rewarded. He’s going to start for England this time.
The Bad
Short side lineout defence. Need to do something about that as
we got picked apart very easily there. Similar with Botica’s
kickpass, clearly something they’d seen. Can’t happen again.
Castres did their homework on us and we need to self-scout
better to cut things like this out.
Defence in the first 20 minutes was incredibly loose. Better
after that outside of the situations below. We made them make a
lot of mistakes.
Steele. Looked very rusty and got caught wondering way too much.
Needs to play, but I'd start Gjaltema.
Starting to see teams isolate us more as we make breaks, leading
to more turnovers. Not just Huw Jones although he is the chief
culprit (thought jones had a good game actually), this is a team
problem.
The Ugly
Marler’s stamp. Sometimes the gamesmanship goes too far, which
he acknowledged when carded. This will be blasphemous to some,
but he had one of those games, more broadly, where the podcast
host and not the world class loosehead shows up and plays a
caricature of the player he can be, without being particularly
effective. Test match rugby will be good for him and bring the
intensity back.
Ben Botica. Same player he always was, even in this, the Ben
Botica Revenge Game. Flashes of brilliance. Hit and miss
kicking. Moments of madness. He is just not meant to play rugby
at the stoop. Missed a hatful and directly cost his side the
game. I’d say that’s the account settled.
The ref. Far too whistle happy. Didn’t get a lot right. Castres
have a right to feel upset about how the last two minutes played
out. He has England vs Wales in a few weeks. Can you imagine…
Castres throwing water over Marcus as he converted the final
try. They have every right to be upset, but there’s no place for
that in the game.

You have to take what comes so another win - well done. As a
Wuss supporter then I have a interest in how Nick David
and CS-W progress, Kerrod seems to have established himself.
The referee made some big errors in the last three minutes
starting with the blatant forward pass and from his interview
even Dombrant thought the the try was 50/50. Lets hope the ref
is better in the Engalnd v Wales game, he has a less than
perfect record.

100% agree with this. From the South stand it looked as though
he reached the line, but lost the ball. When we watched on the
big screen and saw that he had control, then we were sure that
the try would stand.

The ref made some big errors throughout the game, but in both
directions. It’s not like he suddenly started making dubious
decisions in those last few minutes.
First I’ve seen of David and he looks like a good challenger to
Green. He needs to calm down a little and not try to make the
miracle play himself, but I think he will be very good for us.
Jones is slowly settling in - still trying too hard but
improving gradually. Taulani is a real unit - first time I’ve
seen him close enough to realise how big he is. I always thought
he was quite skinny but he’s got almost a prop’s upper body.
Quite a handy alternative to Chis, though i think we missed a
little of Chis or Lawday’s rugby nous last night.
You know how they say that a stranger is just a friend you
haven’t yet met? At the Stoop, a big deficit is just a bunch of
tries that Quins haven’t yet scored.

So we picked a XV with only five regular starters containing
several who have hardly played recently and played with an
enormous amount of heart and desire and beat a very decent
French team albeit with some help from a former player and the
officials.
Much to admire as well as criticise.

Let’s hope they learn from this as they tackle the next 2 months
without our talisman players - true test of our depth, endurance
and mental application.
