THE CLUB IS DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT HARLEQUINS ACADEMY BACK
OSCAR BEARD HAS SIGNED A NEW LONG-TERM DEAL
The 20-year-old is the fifth player to recommit his future to
the club over the last week, following Alex Dombrandt, Luke
Northmore, Sam Riley, and Will Edwards.
Beard has committed his long-term future to the Club having made
his breakthrough into the senior team over the last eight
months, extending an eight-year career with the Club to date
having joined as a 12-year-old.
A centre by trade, Beard made his senior Club debut on the wing
against Sale Sharks in April 2021 and has gone on to earn six
further appearances so far this season in his breakthrough
campaign.

Earning much notoriety following a standout performance against
London Irish in the Gallagher Premiership earlier this season,
Beard was named in former Harlequins, England, and British and
Irish Lions centre Will Greenwood’s team of the week.
Commenting on his new long-term deal, Beard said: “I’m
absolutely over the moon. I love this club and I’ve supported it
as a youngster coming through.
“I’ve loved all of the opportunities I’ve had here so far, and
it’s been a dream come true to play at The Stoop and in a number
of different games. Just being out there is amazing and a great
experience for me.
“One of the biggest things here is being able to train, play and
learn from the likes of Marcus Smith, Andre Esterhuizen, Danny
Care and the other experienced players we have here. Learning
off those guys has been incredible and has only helped me
progress.
“It’s been inspiring to see the likes of Marcus, Alex Dombrandt
and Cadan Murley come in as younger players and go on to do what
they’re doing in the team now. It sends a real message out to
the young lads coming through. It’s a great motivation for us to
know that pathway is there for us to progress. The support from
Tabai, the coaching staff and more experienced heads like Danny
has been helpful and it shows in how well we’re playing, with
confidence and our brand of rugby.
“For me at the moment I just want to play as many games as
possible and keep performing well. I love winning and I want to
do that with Quins and play in big games. I take each day as it
comes and perform as best as I can and see where that takes me.”

Skills and Kicking Coach Charlie Mulchrone said: “It’s great to
have Oscar recommit to Quins. He’s a great guy to work with and
has to be one of the nicest humans I’ve ever met. He has heaps
of potential and has taken the opportunities that have come his
way within the senior team fantastically.
“We’ve seen a glimpse of what he can do during his appearances
so far, but there is plenty more to come and we’re excited to
see him continue to grow as he progresses into the senior side.”

Re-signing two current Academy players suggests that we're
moving some of them on to senior contracts. Which may explain
why there wasn't room to keep Tiz, and also supports the
expectation that several of the older squad players will be
moving on if their contracts are up for renewal.

Following that thought forward.
If you bring Beard and Riley through from the academy into the
main squad - does that mean a squad Hooker (Gray?) and
Centre/wing (Jones, Morris) might move on?
We've always really gone for a bit of 'one in, one out'
recruitment.
I also wonder how much the hand is played - If you are Tiz or
Riley and on an academy contract - other clubs will have seen
the potential and offered to take you up to main squad scale.
But some other might have less profile and so can stay on an
academy contract from clubs POV for longer?
Do you follow?

Would expect Gray and both Morris and Jones to be off honestly.
Part of me can see Morris and Gray both retiring

much they're using him at the moment

I thought Jones was signed on a year long deal with an option
for a second year. Based on his performances so far, id be
amazed if we wanted to keep him around. Would much rather cap
space and game time to someone like Anyanwu or Hyde who could
develop into an option at 12.

I think part of the reason we're seeing Jones(H) playing more is
that Jones(E) likes the idea of Marchant as a winger in his
squad so we're being asked to play him there for experience &
that brings Jones into the 23.
Why we haven't seen Nick David more than cameo is more of a
headscratcher.

Suspect the issue retaining Tizard was about the precedent. With
so many talented youngsters coming through internally it all but
guarantees more direct salary comparison and heightens the need
for a consistent pay structure. Matching an additional (for
example) 30-50% for one player may not break the bank, but the
effect it would have on overall expectations / costs would do.
Also, while I could see Chisholm Snr retiring, Morris has just
turned 27 and for me still has plenty of value to add to our
back three depth.

In defense of Morris, he has looked excellent when he had a run
of games on the wing. He is unit and has a booming left boot.
I'd be very surprised to see him move on.
I expect the likes of Jones will be gone, he has not impressed
at all. We have Beard, Ayanwu, Murely, Marchant, Northmore, and
Hyde, all of whom can play 12 or 13. They are all mainly 13's
but I suspect Northmore, Hyde, and Auanwu will cover 12 when
Andre the giant is suspected, injured or with SA.
On the wing, we look good with Lyanagh, Murely, David, Green,
Morris, Cleaves, Marchant, Beard and Ojo.
