Please not back to Sky. If it goes to Prime I'd have to buy a
new TV, but can cope with that as I need one anyway. Sky's
coverage was painful and so expensive to get Sky

If a deal is done the contract should stay with the new owner
until it expires, unless there's change in control clause that
PRL exercises.
The question is what happens to existing subscribers - e.g. if
you have it as an add on to BT Broadband or Sky does that remain
or do you need a new contract?

Rugby needs its own channel with all the leagues from the world
on it more than anything.
People in the who only like rugby have to subsidies football if
it's on sky or BT.
BT pay 40M a year for prem rugby.
They pay 295M for year of prem football.
I wonder which is driving the subscription prices.
You would pick up foreign leagues pretty cheap as there is no
current broadcaster or interest from them for that matter.

The deals stays with the owners similar thing happened when BT
took on Setanta Sports.
But rugby union seems to be in a bit of retreat. There is no
domestic highlights on terrestrial and channel 4 seem to be more
interested in covering rugby league currently so if BT goes I
cannot see anyone other than sky picking up rights and even then
at a discount because the demand for it could be low.
Don't forget BT offered Premiership Rugby a higher amount for
the current rights initially but Premiership Rugby (being pushed
by CVC) rejected it trying to start a bidding war. Non was
forthcoming. Then they went back to BT who are now paying lower
than what they originally offered.
Sports companies are picking and choosing what to pay now.
Football of course is the driver but even the Premier League
offered to roll over the previous rights amount because they
knew any bid would be lower than current prices.

Anyone know if the idea is to keep the BT Sport channels running
for the brand recognition, but with DAZN owning them and
steering the business? If so, might not be much of a material
change for the paying audience...?

BT Sport is a huge brand, why would you not use it?

As it goes, subscription prices are being driven down due to
competition.
The reason BT went in heavy on sports rights was to try to
increase their broadband subcribers, as simple as that.
When it was a straight fight with Sky, they could justify the
spend on the basis of flogging several services to customers.
Trouble is - for them - that Amazon and others are now grown up
to the point where they can actually output decent content. They
don't have to worry about a per-head number for people
subscribing just for the sport, because their customer volume
means they can balance out the cost.
The big other problem (for broadcasters) was the shift to
premium content (not sport) - punters now value high quality tv
shows and movies, a move driven by Netflix, and picked up early
by Sky (hence building massive new film studios and spending
more than 1 million per episode on multiple dramas).
So suddenly sports content that isn't football doesn't
particularly mean much.
Sky will get far more people to pay for a series of Succession
on NowTV than they are to convince you to sign up to an annual
package of sports channels just so they can see the rugby.
The upside for us as fans is that everyone's got better at
broadcasting live sport - Amazon were awful to start with but
the Autumn internationals were excellent. BT was just the same,
the first couple of seasons of rugby were abysmal (then they
realised Matt Dawson is a **** and it all got better from
there...)
If it hadn't been for covid and the continuation deal that was
struck on football rights and it had gone to auction, they were
forecast to have been worth between 500m and 1bn less than the
previous deal.
The upshot of which is it should be cheaper to watch a lot of
sport but there's no doubt you'll have to have more
subscriptions to see everything - and terrestrial highlights
deals aren't going to always feature.
