Stephen Jones in The Sunday Times

i Blow hot and cold with his articles but in today's report on
the Quins / Exeter match he suggested that the carding for the
tip tackle on Marler was taking the laws too far. That referees
were using cards too much. My interpretation of the article - I
think that I have it right.
If I am right, then how can you argue that the tackle was not
dangerous. I guess if that's his view then it conforms nicley
to argue that referees issue cards too often. However, IMHO how
he (Stephen Jones) thought tipping someone onto their head is
acceptable. Joe could have ended up like Brian O'Driscoll after
the infamous NZ v Lions game or worse.

Some would have said that two Exeter players could have been
shown red for that incident. It certainly looked bad on the
replays.

The reverse angle wasn’t shown in the ground as far as I can
tell, but seeing it online Simmonds is pulling Joe forwards and
down rather than lifting him up. He was legal, but Hepburn
lifted, tipped and let go.

What is Stephen Jones on? How can he - even at his most
relentlessly blinkered and misguided - conclude that that, of
all the incidents on an incident filled weekend, was the one
that showed that cards were being overused?
If nothing else, the tip tackle framework is there, and well
established, and objective. Was Marler lifted beyond the
horizontal? Yes. Did he land on his head? Yes. Did Hepburn make
any effort to bring him to ground safely? No. Is there any
mitigation that would allow the sanction to be reduced from a
red card? No.
Either the entire framework is wrong, or Stephen Jones is. I
know which my money is on (and has been since at least 2012).

Normally a couple of free lunches and a crate of wine a week

Jones needs sacking. He's a hopeless old Jack so out of touch
with reality that he's just embarrassing now. I rather like the
Times rugby podcast but he spoils it when he's on. The other
week be was trying to school Mark Evans on the "business" of
rugby 🤔
