It just seems such a strange thing!
Joe has got another 3 years (and a potentially big contract)
playing for us at his current standard, I would say. This gives
plenty of time to develop Baxter. He can then consider his next
move and level of playing involvement.
He is a talisman of the club and seems completely settled at the
club, as well as, and most importantly, at home. I just can't
see it.
And yet, I am worried that some rumours have come true,
recently. I am just praying it ain't so!

Nothing from arniepie yet... fingers crossed.
In terms of Baxter's readiness, Joe and Kyle both went from
Academy to obvious first choice over the course of not much more
than a season, and when they were barely out of their teens.
Baxter looks to be in the same sort of class so barring injury
I'd have high confidence in his ability to step up. We also have
Els, and potentially another season or two out of Botta, who has
improved significantly this season.
But I really hope that Joe sees out his playing days at Quins.
He's a one off, and the club would be diminished if he were to
leave for another club.

According to Dave Rogers who works at Quins, Marler has 18
months left anyway so the rumours would be rubbish.

Why don't people understand that under the New SC restrictions,
anyone can go at anytime if club and player agree, this allows
spending right away in areas of concern, supporters have to
accept that you can't have 15 top earners now that the 1m+
reduction can take 50-100k of the earnings of a player. If clubs
aren't breaking salary cap there will be even more carnage at
clubs next season when contracts run out.

From tigers pov I don’t believe this rumour but both Ford and
Genge signed for long term deals same time as Marler and it was
announced by Tigers as long term deals but both players due to
covid had the option to not take the 3rd year.
Not saying that is the case now but it’s a pretty common thing
with those covid cut contracts.
Jonny Hill at Exeter was similar I think.
Only ones who will know are the staff who handle contracts,
players and agents really.

The article acknowledges that Marler is still under contract
next season, but that does not mean he cannot leave (as
mentioned above). Anyway, time will tell

Logically, with Marler being under contract till the end of next
season, there is no need for him to sign a new deal currently
