An honest assessment

Clearly just my view which others may disagree with but I think
today was a real disappointment. It was a game that could have
changed the tempo of the season. Win today and top 6 (maybe top
4) was on, lose and play for 8th. Unfortunately the latter
happened and I think 8th will be a good result this season now.
I know he’s received criticism on here but I thought DC was
excellent with an inexperienced 10 (I was at the game and he
covered so much ground in defence maybe not shown on tv).
Marler had another very poor game for me. Too many critical
penalties conceded (I counted 4 but could be wrong). I wonder if
both he and the club would benefit from him finding a new home
away from Harlequins. The worrying thing is that the same could
be said about Sinkler if he’s not managed correctly. Ward was
awful, Wallace was non existent (what has happened to him) and
Robshaw simply isn’t a leader (great rugby player but no
leader).
There’s a lot for Gustard to do and it won’t happen overnight
but the club is still going backwards (in all aspects as the
supporters experience at Bristol was much better than the Stoop
for me) and it’s going to take something special to reverse that
trend. A very easy opening to the season (I foolishly thought
we’d be top after 4 games given the opposition) so to have only
won 1 out of 4 is simply not good enough

I agree entirely except your view of DC who imho is part of the
problem.It is likely to be a depressing season and a major
player clear out is probably the only answer.

Danny was immense yesterday. He swept up 2 clear oppo try
scoring opportunities behind our defence, both from some
distance. Robshaw was absolutely everywhere and in defence was
outstanding. As far as I can remember neither side achieved a
turnover in the rucks although Brizz did manage a maul turnover.
We stole their lineout 2 or 3 times but then our lineout
misfired on their line with a call of "RED" going straight over
everybodys head. We showed great attacking intent whenever the
opportunity arose and the handling in those horrendous
conditions was exemplary. Well done NEv.
In my view this was a game between two pretty evenly matched
sides with the difference being the phenomenal kicking, given
the conditions, of Madigan. I can confirm that every penalty he
scored had a parabolic flight to it in the winds so very
impressive.

I think te difference was how many pens we gave away. You cant
give up that much ball and territory and expect to win. Nearly
an entire half with 14 men

Of course but to turn that around, what a superb effort to gain
a LBP in such adversity.

In fairness we have been in with a shout to get something more
in all 3 defeats. I still think fine margins at the moment. It
will take time to reverse last season and move forward. My hope
this season is avoid relegation (which I think we will) and see
progress. Next season then we start to look at making top 6,
maybe even 4 depending on how quick the process is. In terms of
progress, defence is improved, attack looks more promising. LO
did worry me but after watching Crumpton, it wasnt an issue till
Ward came on. Main issue, Discipline and kicking, sort that and
things will be heading in the right direction much quicker.

Robshaw isn’t a leader? All over the park talking with team and
ref well
Danny excellent,?every time he retrieved the ball he kicked away
our possession , bar a couple of occasions, and he does it all
the time
There was no way Marlers hand off was a card, penalty yes, agree
Wallace is well off the boil

When criticising DC kicking away possession, you should first
remember that he is executing a game plan agreed in advance with
coaches. Simply put he's been told to do that and play pragmatic
territory game plan. He would have been taken off in a second if
he was going against the agreed game plan. Problem was we didn't
follow up on kicks well either when chasing or when trying to
get to win the ball back. It's easy and maybe lazy to blame the
kickers just like it is easy to blame the hooker for an over
throw that's just as likely a timing issue in jumpers. In fact
the fact that so many of our hookers are considered bad throwers
probably means the problem isn't them.
One of my major issues with last season was that we far to often
tried to play in wrong part of the field, meaning when we did
well in attack we were not close enough to score and when we
made a mistake we often conceeded.
The sale game I was really pleased with as we didn't do that. We
got territory first then executed. I was really upbeat after
that. Now it's gone wrong.
With our squad we should be so much better. At least PG doesn't
seem to be hiding behind injuries and other excuses.

Crumpton managed to hit his jumpers. As for the kicking, I
agree about game plan and chasers but, the kicks were not very
good!!!

Ward has always had trouble hitting his man with us, had plenty
of jumpers over the years. Yesterday we won a pen. Kick to
corner, win LO pen adv, Care did well and scored anyway. Simple.
A win for the forwards and points on the board. So then we
stop winning pens and start giving them away!!! Second half when
we did win another, kick to corner(ish) Ward manages to clear
the entire line. Wasted chance. Small margins in close games
like yesterday. I honestly think teams are content to give away
pens against us as they know f we go for the corner there is a
very good change we will balls it up. We go for the corner and
my first thought is "please win the ball". Should not be the
case. Look at Exeter, they go for the corner and I would bet
most fans think "5 points here". Even their a side do it with
scary regularity.
It should be an attacking weapon, ours is a joke tbh.
