Agreed. Wade is still only 30. If he decided he wanted to come
back to rugby, I doubt he’d short of suitors.
FWIW, I think Ibitoye will do well at Bristol. They were at
their best when Radradra, (Charles) Piutau and Naulago were
playing instinctive, unstructured rugby. Gabs will fit right in
to that.

But he’s still never developed to the level that his
performances at Irish suggested he might.

Good luck to him. Wasn't he good friends with Sinck? That may be
a factor in him going there.

I believe that is because people who are gifted, whether
genetically or due to an unusually effective early development
advantage, are still not often that far ahead of others who work
really hard and apply themselves. People who apply themselves
well and listen/learn effectively can always make considerable
gains in performance over others. Maybe some tasks are a little
bit different, perhaps where they are so simple that a narrow or
single genetic advantage allows them to dominate (strainght line
running?). But I don't think rugby is generally that sort of
task - it's a number of tasks and qualities that have to
interact.
Anyone remember Cau Cau (Rupeni)? - he was likely gifted and did
some mind-blowing things even when he was unfit (which was most
of the time!). I thought he was one of the best players of all
time. But his lack of application and lack of discipline meant
he missed a lot of important games and infuriated a lot of
coaches. He is probably sitting around skint somewhere now,
smoking weed.

That's exactly the point, I think. Some players are just too
used to cruising and getting away with stuff because of their
natural gifts, whereas a lot of the ones who have real longevity
and reach the highest levels are those who keep working.
Johnny May's a great example - naturally in Gabs and Wade's
class for speed, but he worked really hard on his positioning
and running lines until he could put in a performance like the
one against Argentina where Daly got red carded and he had to
play both wings for 78 minutes.
Smith vs Cipriani is another interesting one. I don't think Cips
was lazy about working on his skills, but it was only later in
his career after his international chances had been used up that
he really worked on getting the most out of a team. Smith has
similar talent but is very clearly someone that other players
want to play with and who keeps learning - even at the expense
of making some mistakes.

him, despite the result. We arnt exactly struggling for quality
on the wing but he could no things basically no one else in
rugny can
