Yup, a lot of his success came so early. It's such a shame he
couldn't apply himself in defence. He was never going to be a
big hitter but he was all over the place positionally as well as
being occasionally a bit flappy when tackling.
I keep hearing he's on the cusp of doing something good in NFL,
but...

Wade could never quite get out of his system the idea that he
could show an opponent the outside and rely on his speed to get
out of trouble. He could get away with it at club level but it
was always too dangerous a vulnerability at international level.
While he improved a bit over the years, the habit was always
there and he tended to revert to it under pressure, so
successive England coaches just weren't comfortable gambling on
him.

I fear his NFL chances have also now gone. He was part of
something called the International Player Pathway Program,
allocated to the Buffalo Bills. Despite some hype (mainly from
this side of the Atlantic, he scored a 65 yard touchdown run in
a pre season game) he never got beyond the Bill's Practice Squad
and although his place on the Pathway Program was extended for a
third year he apparently picked up a season ending shoulder
injury in pre-season. Technically he doesn't appear to have been
cut from the Bill's squad so health permitting he might get
another chance but with the way American sport works there will
always be a younger model rolling off the College Football
production line.

It always seemed like a real long shot - American sports
produces players with his attributes by the dozen, except for
the fact they're also a lot bigger. Add in their laissez-faire
attitude to performance enhancing drugs, and, well...

Just watched a video of us v Exeter which was posted by the club
as a build up to this weekend. It’s the one where we get a
penalty try at the end to win. In it you see Ibitoye attempting
a tackle although it looks like he thinks he’s playing touch
rugby. This is the problem. We don’t know if it’s lack of
commitment , bravery, fear, laziness or attitude but I guess the
coaches do. James Haskell has said in his book that Wadie would
fall asleep in team meetings which might indicate another
attitude problem.
It’s the old , I’m so good that I don’t have to graft and
nobody can teach me anything, syndrome. Some players are
coachable and some are not. Guess which ones have the best
careers.

I had heard plenty of rumours about Yarde’s application before
he left but since he’s gone up north, he seems to have become a
popular member of the squad.
Maybe being let go was the kick he needed to grow up.

We don’t miss Gabs, and got better when he and others left. I’d
rather have the players we’ve got now. Good luck at Brizzle is
all I can say.
