This is really good data. Dombrandt and Lynagh are right up
there in terms of ratio. Dombrandt already has way more tries
than Nick Easter ever got for us in a decade playing and is
still only 24! Can't be many better than Lynagh in terms of
finishing.
Gabs was an exciting player but you feel the guys we have there
now are far from being a problem. quite the opposite!

Good luck to him, but unless he's seriously worked on his
fundamentals then I struggle to see him being more than squad
filler for any prem side.

Gabs has got incredible talent and potential but it remains to
be seen if he'll realise it. I hope he does.
Until he does though, it's hard to justify playing him ahead of
a less naturally gifted but far more well rounded player.

He's another one who believed his own hype. It tastes more than
just talent to succeed at t the highest level. You need hard
work and dedication and a willingness to learn and adapt. You
also have to be able to defend...

Gabs is one of those players (like Wade) who could rely on an
outrageous natural talent all the way up to professional level,
but was then found wanting against players who'd worked harder
on their positioning and skills.
One of the things that characterises the best Quins sides is how
many of our players, especially from 6 to 15, have an
exceptional reading of the game that enables them to make the
most of the talents they do have. Not just players whose
positioning was exceptional like Brown, Williams and now Murley
and Lynagh, but Robshaw's ability to be at the right point to
influence the action despite his lack of pace, Lowe's ability to
shut down much bigger opponents and slide through gaps no-one
else could see, Marchant's uncanny knack of being there to pick
up a bobbling ball (or a kick sliding wide of the posts) before
anyone else has adjusted. Or Marler's ability to put in a
crunching tackle out of nowhere that stops an attack in its
tracks.
I think it might be one reason that so many sons of former
internationals are breaking onto the scene now: they learn from
their dads how to be in the right place at the right time. I saw
one of the even younger Lynaghs playing in a school match last
year and even at what I think was U14 his reading of the space
was a cut above.
The ideal is to have players who are innately gifted and also
work on being the best they can (something Johnny May achieved
while he was at his peak - remember him playing both wings after
Daly's red card, and something Marcus is edging ever closer to),
but I think I'd rather have those who've worked for it than
those who are coasting on talent and waiting to be found out.

Interesting thought about the offspring of former players. It
could of course just be genetics....
I agree is rather have the guys who work for it than the ones
who are just talented and coast

Not just at pro level. There are often amateur players who were
the giant at school but are out of ideas when they run at a 5'
6" bloke who's been tackling bigger guys for 15+ years.

To be fair I think a number of Premiership sides would be
delighted to have a player as wanting as Wade!

Yeah I'm not sure about that comparison! Wade played 130 matches
for Wasps, scoring 82 tries, which is mad (63% - higher than
everyone listed in that post bar small-sample-count Lynagh). Got
onto a Lions tour. Obviously he never had an international
career because of his weaknesses, but he was a serious threat at
club level and a huge player for Wasps. Gabs never got that far.

Wade should have had more of a chance at international level,
but probably shouldn't have made a Lions tour.
His try record is incredible given that he left union relatively
early
