I thought Niall Saunders retired for medical reasons? (Might be
totally wrong) Fair amount of ex Quins out there

The only current English winger who comes close to his attacking
talent is Radwan, and he's made a mockery of us a few times! And
yet it's no surprise that Gabs ended up in the wilderness while
Radwan's getting looked at by England.

We (Ven Fitness) released a podcast about 5 minutes ago with
Gabs and Niall. Due to covid and it only being me available, it
turned into quite an informal chat between myself and them, but
gave some insight into their decision making around Quins exit,
France/travelling, and then Tel Aviv.
What I will say though is that Tel Aviv was an incredible
experience for them both, and they would both play there again.
They've both got forward professional contracts, and Gabs also
confirmed that he is returning to the Prem next season.

He may score a worldie but will probably miss tackles allowing
us to get 3 tries

Lynagh's a different style of player but the stats say he is
significantly better at scoring tries than Gabs ever was. Gabs
scored 4 tries in 17 appearances. Lynagh had 11 at 17
appearances and currently has 23 in 24 appearances. Even
allowing for Quins being a much better team these days that's a
whopping difference.
That said, the current squad is blessed with some players with
phenomenal strike rates (For comparison, Ugo's career club
strike rate was 36%, Brown's was 29%):
Lynagh 23/24 - 96%
Dombrandt 50/86 - 58%
Green 18/33 - 55%
Marchant 48/121 - 40%
Northmore 13/37 - 35%
Murley 18/60 - 32%
Care 98/319 - 31%
Smith 27/117 - 23%
Esterhuizen 7/32 - 22% (making him the only player in our
current first choice backs who scores less frequently than Gabs)
If you put Marchant on the wing, dropped Murley and included the
forwards...
Chis 18/121 - 15%
Kenningham 3/23 - 13%
Lewies 5/43 - 12%
Wilco 2/30 - 7%
Marler 9/243 - 4%
(Symons and Walker haven't scored any tries yet)
Our First XV has a current collective average strike rate of 4.1
tries per game. Maybe I should factor more bonus points into the
roadmap.
Getting back to the point, there were certain kinds of tries
that Gabs could finish and no-one else could (though I thought
Green's reach for the line in the semi final was very
Gabs-like), but Lynagh finishes a wider range of chances with a
much wider range of skills. It would be nice to see Murley score
more tries, but his strike rate is respectable and he makes a
lot of yards.

Bear in mind that whoever updates the player stats on the Quins
website has the mathematical ability of a woodlouse with a
headache.
Lynagh has 16 tries in 23 or 24 games. Quins have him listed as
playing one minute against Bristol which would be his debut,
although I think they have this wrong. So probably 23 games.
He's not the only player whose stats they've botched either.

Radwan's pretty much unique in his ability to create something
out of nothing. His strike rate is pretty good, too - he's
scored 37 tries in 48 appearances (77%).

He has a blood disorder but actually retired from professional
rugby as a lifestyle choice

That was a good read. Thought it was slightly bold to claim that
he could retire happy in the knowledge that he was good enough
to play for Ireland.

Where did you account for the difference in the teams they
played in, out of curiosity?
Look, my point isn't that Gabs is a better try scorer than
Lynagh, because that's patently not true. My point is that Gabs'
footwork and acceleration are utterly incredible - the sort of
thing you only see in a few players every generation. I'm not
claiming he's a better rugby player, I'm saying his ceiling is
higher because his raw talent and athletic ability are frankly
mind-blowing. His ability to step multiple players in a tiny
amount of space or just gas people from a standing start would
make Lynagh and Murley incredible players, because the rest of
their game is so good.
Not everything needs a statistical analysis. Saying Gabs is
capable of doing things most other players can't is one of those
posts.
