Who do we have in the academy?
We of all teams know if you are good enough, you are old enough.
Northampton have Jake Garside who won the MoTM award in his
first outing in National 1.
It will be interesting to see how he develops.

Cooney has signed a new contract. And ali price who would have

stuck behind price could be worth a look tho

he's out of form and favour, he's also out of contract, and
Quins have a good record of picking up out of favour players and
getting a lot out of them (Ross, Kohn, Gomarsall, Baldwin,
Walker...).

Danny at all. He'll be on a big wedge, and we will need to fit
the squad inside a reduced cap. It would be sensible planning to
have recruited comparatively low cost replacements ahead of
time. It may be that next season we rely on Steele and Gjaltema
with no plan to bring a headline scrum half in.

Baptiste Serin has signed a new contract with Bordeaux so that
rules him out too.
Is Maunder out of favour? He’s started 10 games this season.
Apart from a bit of early hype, I’ve never regarded him as any
more than very average. I guess you could make an argument for
him performing a specific role in Exeter’s system, but all I see
from him are the basics - no obvious spark or creativity. Steele
is better than that and I’d like to think Gjaltema and Stafford
have the potential to reach and ideally surpass Maunder’s level.
I’m sort of comfortable with not signing a big name replacement,
but given Steele’s injury record (and Scotland involvement), I
suspect we’ll need another player. In the past - mainly the
period between Evans and Smith (+ Smith’s first couple of
seasons) - DC had a role in carrying the attack. With the
calibre of 10s we have now, that’s less important and it’s less
essential that we have a top class 9. Doesn’t mean it wouldn’t
be nice to have though!

Yeah, exactly. Maunder is Exeter's first choice 9 despite being
fairly awful because they don't have any alternatives. He offers
almost nothing that Danny brings and I cannot see the logic in
suggesting him as a replacement beyond "he might not cost a
lot". He has no running game, his passing and general quickness
from the base isn't great, and his kicking is a big step down
from White. He makes a lot of errors.
While I do think that there's a lot of wishful thinking going on
with some of the names being mentioned, saddling Smith with a
sub par scrum half would be an excellent way to put a handbrake
on his career and Quins' hopes.

I'd rather we didn't look to take an established name, but if we
did I'd be happy with the return of Sam Hidalgo-Clyne.

That would be a good shout if he’s available

Plenty of options for a young English scrum half, Gloucester
have Charlie Chapman who looks to be a very talented scrummie &
Leicesters Jack van Poortvliet is another that looks quality,
along with the likes of more established Quirke, Randall,
Spencer (might be worth a look with bath being so toilet).
Issue with getting a highly rated English scrum half, if he
gains form and really kicks on we could be losing our full
8-9-10 in the international break.
The next few months is going to be very intriguing to see what
clubs do with their squads to fit into the new pay structure.

Toulon*
The former Bordeaux player has been with Toulon for a couple of
seasons. And for four more seasons I believe. It’s a shame as I
love the way Baptiste Serin plays and he would br a great future
replacement for Care. Hopefully in four years 😅

Trying to attract French talent over here is very hard - they
can earn more in France with higher cap and his wage demands
would probably make him all but too expensive for English rugby
clubs. The last star I remember was Louis Picamoles - and that
was some time ago.
I can also imagine any English club fighting tooth and nail to
keep the likes of Randall, JVP, Raffi Du Klerk and Faf Du Quirke
- but as Sinckler showed, once there is money/security involved,
anything is possible, but costly...

Can everyone please do me a favour and stop talking about Raffi
(or Faf) joining Quins? 😬
