Faf if offered as he could be great for our younger scrum halves
to continue to learn from someone experienced. Going by what
player I'd want without any contractual issues, I'd probably go
with Randall. I feel he would be a great fit with Marcus

I may be the only one but, I just don't get the hype around
       Randall!

I would argue that Danny is probably our most important player
in terms of how we play and is completely central to our
identity. When NEV retired, he took on a lot more of the game
management responsibilities. He is our beating heart as much as
Marcus is or NEV was from 2008 onwards for a decade. Such as
unique skill set with the ability to run the game from 9 while
being just a downright talented rugby player with incredible
basic skills. Easily the best 9 the club has ever had, a club
legend and like-for-like, currently completely irreplaceable.
Like, who do you bring in with the same skill set? I'd suggest
of the current crop, only Smith, Perenara, De Klerk, Nic White
and Dupont are as good or better and none of them are realistic
options given that the cap is being revised down.
Even if he's a part-time player next year or leaves completely,
his succession plan must be something the coaches are thinking
about because he is that important. He is probably one of the
few players we have that is realistically irreplaceable from
within (at least initially). His immediate term replacement
isn't on the roster, but his long term one might be.
A 19 year old DC showed up from Leeds in 2006 at the same time
as Gomarsall, who held the shirt for a couple of years before DC
wrenched it off him and became part of the furniture. I could
see the same thing happening here, either with Danny staying or
we bring in a veteran player for a couple of years and see if
Gjaltema/Stafford step into his shoes just as he did Gommers'. I
think Gjaltema is most likely of the guys already here, but he
needs to play so we can find out. Steele is a Dickson-like
backup I think, and it might be that due to the cap that he's
given a shot at being the guy running the game for a year until
one of the kids beats him out if care decides to retire
A likely strategy might be going for another younger guy with an
experienced incumbent in front of him elsewhere or someone
talented but without the exposure from NZ, AUS or SA (the Tyrone
Green of 9s) who we can sit behind a 36 year old DC or Steele
and to compete with Gjaltema for the long term starting job
there. Either way, whoever plays 10 is going to have to manage
the game more if/when DC isn't here anymore. The guy is
completely irreplaceable, and the coaches will know that things
will need some adjustment when he's no longer here. Being in the
system long enough helps, which is why Gjaltema deserves and is
likely to get a shot at it in the long run.

I like Tate McDermott at Queensland, Or Moses Sorovi (but he has
just joined the Rebels from Queensland). Exciting players to
       watch

I'd suggest John Cooney as the nearest like-for-like replacement
in the Northern Hemisphere. Experienced, with an excellent
kicking game when needed, but is a high tempo running 9 by
nature. He's out of favour with Farrell, so might be attainable,
but would command a decent wedge no doubt.
I'd be more than happy if we could prise one of the many
promising English 9's away. I think Randall, Quirke, Van
Portfleet and even Mitchell all have the tools to be successful
and I'd back our coaches to make them better players in the
       medium term.

Aye, but DC’s nearly 35 and is still a very good player. 31 is
       not over the Hill.
Cooney would be excellent IMO. Other than DC, I’d rate him as
the best 9 not currently playing test rugby. He’s also a very
good goal-kicker which would be very useful if we are without
Smith and Allan (as we are now).
While he definitely wouldn’t be cheap, I don’t think he would be
astronomically expensive. Although he’s being linked with
Bordeaux as well who would be much better positioned to throw
       money at him.
I really like the idea of Tate McDermott, but I’m not sure he’d
be tempted North until he’s a genuine fixture in the Wallabies’
side and COVID becomes less of a limitation.

I really like the idea that one of our present second/third
string SH can make the party rock and roll - cheaper, less
induction required and we have some time…

The question is which scrum half — of those potentially eligible
and the right age to be with us for many years — would best suit
our style of play and, our number 10. My sense is Quirke or
       Mitchell.

Absolutely. We can have all the wish lists we like, but it's
going to come down to who's out of contract.
It's the reason I suggested Maunder somewhere up above. While
he's out of form and favour, he's also out of contract, and
Quins have a good record of picking up out of favour players and
getting a lot out of them (Ross, Kohn, Gomarsall, Baldwin,
       Walker...).
And we shouldn't exclude the possibility that we won't replace
Danny at all. He'll be on a big wedge, and we will need to fit
the squad inside a reduced cap. It would be sensible planning to
have recruited comparatively low cost replacements ahead of
time. It may be that next season we rely on Steele and Gjaltema
with no plan to bring a headline scrum half in.
