I'm not sure hysteria is the right word. There's caution, and
rightly so.
Part of the issue, currently, is not the number of hospitalised
cases. It's the number of absent hospital staff. In addition the
surge started maybe a week ago? Just over? Hospital admissions
are well below the peak but on the increase, so it does remain
to be seen what it'll do over the next few weeks. There will
obviously always be people that pick up a serious illness or die
with COVID, but hopefully - alongside responsible behaviour -
the jab programme does the trick and keeps the numbers low.

Apparently he players sacked off Christmas drinks after the
Cardiff game in order to minimise the risk of positive tests.

Looks like the game should go ahead as planned, with fans, PM
announced no changes until after Christmas and any changes
usually get 2/3 notice so it's doubtful it will be impacted.

I wouldn't bet anything on that! They could be made on Xmas Eve,
if the numbers in the next few days go north; however, they have
been the same for the last three or four days, so here's hoping
they have peaked, but I doubt it.
They may say that from Monday, we're back to Level 2 or whatever
it was called, and no big sporting events can take place with
supporters: just depends on whether he sticks to recalling
Parliament to vote for it.
It's still not a certainty, but looks more promising than
yesterday...

The Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly have both announced
today that there will be no crowds at sporting events from
Boxing Day onwards.
My understanding is that all they've said for England, is no
restrictions before Christmas. It's not hard to see England
following from the 26th, or 27th. Johnson has often followed
what the Welsh & Scottish governments have done.
I wouldn't like to be Laurie Dalrymple over the next couple of
days.
