Yes, Danny's contract is up. I cannot see him getting more than
1 - 2 years extra. He will be super experienced by that point.
He is no doubt a excellent athlete, but if he looses (I think he
has already lost a yard of pace) his pace, the experience should
make up for that lack of dynamism.
Accroding to reports, Smith is on 450,000 a year. If he wants to
get up with the Farrells and Super Maro's then he will need
approx 750,000 a year to 1m. That is a sizable chunk of the 5m
       quid cap.
They have to start thinking about increasing the cap again. It
is going to be so hard for clubs to hang onto all there best
       players.

We could make him the marquee.

I see that the Telegraph is claiming that Genge is to leave
Tigers for Bristol. Assuming Kyle is still there too, they'll
have a very experienced front row but lose their two starting
props for quite a period of time for the International Windows.

I thought the cap change was "temporary" and open to review at
certain times (basically just to help clubs get through Covid
and the subsequent knock on effects for a few seasons)?

Yes, the Tigers have just announced it. He is rumored to be
going to Saracens as a replacement for Vunipola at Loose head. I
can also see him heading to Bristol. There scrum has been
rubbish this year and he is a local boy.

Perhaps Lewis Boyce may come back to us? His contract with Bath
is up and Joe is playing internationals again? Would we want
       him?

Didn't he leave Bristol to get away from various "distractions"?
Maybe he feels he is better equipped to deal with them now but I
suspect he will end up a Cheater.

As others have said, given the average age and clear potential
in our squad, targeting minimum change still gives plenty of
room for the team to improve with further experience. It’s
really hard to know what to do at SH, But I’d like to See Danny
get another year. I would generally aim to keep the Backs as is.
We absolutely need someone who is going to allow Joe’s game time
to be managed, and that is clearly not SGB. I also think it’s
likely we’ll lose a TH, probably Trenier, and it could be
difficult to justify keeping Els given the level of
unavailability we’ve seen throughout his contract. Signing
someone like Lewis Boyce plus perhaps a prospect, like Tom
Osborne who played for us in the Cup, should be affordable on
balance and positive for squad depth.
Elsewhere in the forwards I don’t see any desperate need for
change. Someone like Zack Mercer could be useful, though I’d
assume we’d have to lose a first team regular to get him. It’s
very likely that we’ll be signing a Lock and a Number 8 into the
senior academy in 2022 so I expect the pipeline to remain open.

doing what he does. We just do not have any real depth at loose
head of any quality. The coaches do not rate Garcia Botta, so
only bring him on when they think the game is won.

Yep. This is exactly my thinking. We’re currently in a strange
situation where we have arguably the best first choice loosehead
and the worst second choice loosehead in the league.
Baxter is very promising, but has only recently shifted over to
loosehead and is only 19. I’ve said this before, but there is
such a thing as too much senior rugby too soon for young front
row players. I’m all for bringing him through but I wouldn’t
want to rely on him as second choice as soon as next season. If
you look around the league, Bevan Rodd is the only young prop
under 22 starting regularly. In terms of physical maturity.
Baxter is probably a year or two off being ready to start games.
I’d be happy to have Boyce back. He’d be a significant upgrade
on SGB and is experienced enough to help develop Baxter (and
maybe Els) but also young enough to be around for a while.
