Really interesting reading the comments, loads of good thoughts.
In all honesty, I think we look really good in all departments.
It seems to be that we need to balance winning games with our
first XV and allowing some of our really impressive academy boys
and other youngsters a chance to mix in with the first team.
They have all stepped up well and, in Kenningham, Tizard and
Lamb, we now have some top quality and reliable youngsters who
look absolutely at home in that first XV. Actually Lamb, doesn't
feel like a youngster any more! Riley and Musk also look good as
back up to Walker, who will click in the lineout sooner rather
than later. His game in the loose is very good.
If we do bring new people in, it goes without saying that they
need to get the right people. I have just watched the All Blacks
All or Nothing documentary; that spirit is incredible! We have a
special unity in the team this year and that cannot be
overstated! Bringing in Tabai has been a good addition because
he seems to get it.
Gjaltema has been at the club for 2 years, I think. Maybe they
see him as the long term replacement to DC and have been working
hard to get him into our ways for the long term.
I think Marler has another couple of years, if he wants it. DC
too.

Having read the Academy salary rules on this forum some time ago
I agree we are making very good use of them. IIRC it was only
when Bath/France came calling that Marcus stopped being on an
Academy contract, so not long ago really! My concern, if it can
be called that, is that the academy is doing too well and so
many academy players will be needing senior contracts to retain
them. The core squad is relatively young so do we have enough
retirements to accommodate our graduating academy players? That
said, better to be getting players raised in the 'Quins way'
through the academy than coming in and not fitting with our
ethos.

There are some very interesting rumors circulating about other
clubs.
Exeter are potentially losing Hogg, Johnny Hill, and or Sam
Skinner are leaving. Mainly due to the fact that the salary cap
has been reduced to £5m. Rob Baxter has said that the effect
that this reduction has had, will shock a few people.
It will be interesting to see if we trim the more experienced
players on decent contracts, like SGB and Symonds. That would
free up salary for maybe one extra new body. Then again, Marcus
Smith's contract this up in two years, he is already looking to
increase his salary with a new contract now he is a Prem winner,
British & Irish Lion and England no10.
The balancing act re the Salary Cap is going to be interesting
across the league, let alone Quins.
Is there any idea who's contract is up for renway this year?

Yup, I don't expect to see much movement. We're not in a bad
place at the moment as the youngsters have really come through
for us in the last 12 months, with an excellent set just behind
them too.

I agree. We tend to have about five academy players in our
matchday 23, and this probably describes the way it will be over
the lean years. I suspect that Allan was probably as big a name
as we're likely to see for next year.

Didn't Danny say his contract was up and he was in negotions on
the pod?
If we are going to keep Marcus we are going to have to cut our
cloth accordingly. We couldn't afford to keep Sinks but I would
pull out all the stops to keep Marcus.

I think we may need to reset expectations. With the reduced cap
and the likes of Lynagh and Kenningham deserving improved deals,
I think maintaining the status quo of the squad would be a real
success.
In the event we do have some spare cash , I agree that a back up
LH prop would look to be the priority, however, with the market
seemingly in turmoil, there might be some deals to be done. E.g.
conventional wisdom would suggest we would need to wait for DC
to move on before we bring in a replacement, but if there's a
bargain to be had then presumably we might pull the trigger.

I don't get the calls for a backup loosehead. We have Marler,
who seems to be basically indestructable and borderline
unsusbstitutable, Els, who has been good when fit, and Baxter,
who has been sufficiently promising that Eddie has already had a
look at him.
Unless one of them is long term injured, that's a better roster
than most teams can manage.

Seconded. I think the clubs that have relied more heavily on
buying their squads will end up struggling.
Then again, I think players will also need to be mindful of the
impact of the cap too. There may come a point where the players
going for top money end up pricing themselves out of being
signed.

Marler cannot keep playing 80mins. He has been superhuman doing
what he does. We just do not have any real depth at loose head
of any quality. The coaches do not rate Garcia Botta, so only
bring him on when they think the game is won.
So if we are to sign someone, then I think a quality loose head,
especially if Marler is away with England stil.
