The held up try looked like a good bet in real time - he'd wrong
footed the defenders and it was more a good tackle that stopped
him than anything else. However, there were more occasions in
the game where he could and should have passed but didn't. He
needs to get the balance working better, not least because if
defenders know that there's a passing threat they can't just
concentrate on stopping the run.

OK, apologies. In the cold light of day, an over reaction but
still very unhappy.
Comparisons with DC intercepts not valid as he's often played
high risk on the edge with good intent.
Given Huw's 30 International caps and previous top clubs, I
don't buy 'it was his first game' etc... If he was a rookie
then yes I'd factor that in and be forgiving.
Still trying to understand whether it was just a brain fart or
simply that he just had tunnel vision and white line fever.
Really hope he learns from this and understands that he cannot
put his own personal glory ahead of the team.

Yes it was a shocker. As was Andre trying to get an extra few
metres and missing touch, Marcus knocking the ball out of
Youngs' hand, line-out muck ups in good positions and the
referee trying to stop Dombrandt. We lost that game for many
reasons so let's balance it across the team.

we had several chances to win or not ship points so unfair to
say he lost us the game but it was a stupid decision with a two
man overlap, that is very basic rugby and massive chance missed.
We had 3 minutes of a yellow with a man advantage if we could
have got Marcus back on the pitch but no break in play to bring
him on, I couldn't understand why we wouldn't have kicked the
ball to touch to get him back on. The net result he was off the
pitch for 13 minutes not 10. Marcus deliberate slap of the ball
was stupid, cost us 3 points, could say he cost us the game with
that but again you cant single out one player, him leaving the
pitch for 10 minutes arguably had a bigger effect than Jones
failure to pass. Thought it was a good game overall and e came
really close, think we will beat them on the return.

An incident like Jones failing to pass for a walk-in try is
perhaps frustrating because compared against all the defensive
effort, the pre-game training that would have been done, and the
collective understanding needed to create these interplays that
get us the try opportunities, a simple pass seems like such a
small thing.
After successfully meeting all the challenges that need to be
overcome to get us to the point where we could so easily have
beaten the league-leaders, a simple pass for a walk-in does seem
like such a small and obvious thing to get right. I can
understand the frustration and initial feelings of anger.
But as others have pointed out, our decision-making is not
top-notch across the squad, and probably needs improving -
remember T-CUP?

You have to remember that ‘Thinking Clearly Under Pressure’ was
2003 and many players and perhaps people on this board, were
kids then as 18 years ago.

I don't think it was even that bad a decision - he saw that the
defenders had committed early and it left a gap to go through,
and backed himself to get there.
Arguably with the change in the seatbelt tackle interpretation
it was the wrong call, but an instinctive reaction like that
takes time to change - you train your brain to spot and react to
particular patterns faster than you can consciously make the
decision, and when circumstances change it takes a decent amount
of effort to unlearn it. You can see that this season - it's a
big part of Exeter's failure to catch fire, and I think most
teams have been caught out by a held up try at some point.

If he makes it (he very nearly did) its a conversion next to the
post - if it goes wide, then it's a harder kick in tricky wind.
If he made it, he's a hero, if he fails, he's a zero - somewhat
harsh. Also well defended by home side on line in ground that
has been buzzing all season. Far too early to write him off.

It's OK that players back themselves but IMO it is not easy to
interpret Jones' decision-making using a risk assessment
argument of the pros and cons of a decision, since the pros and
cons of a walk-in will always trump going into contact or trying
to break through defenders.
I tend to think that the live situation, with the passion
involved and the very short time periods for decision-making,
overwhelms the clear-thinking faculties. We can of course think
with clarity when viewing in hind-sight on a screen. I believe
that thinking with clear 20-20 clarity is very hard to do in a
split-second. There is no time fror players to have a discussion
with themselves on pros and cons, of the sort we can have on
this board. Players seem to differ in how well they can process
the decision very quickly with clarity. I don't know much about
how that can be trained. I have seen a protocol whereby
interference is deliberately brought in to upset decision-making
in hand-eye co-ordination tasks.
