Glad that's over! Not at all pretty. First 10 and last 10 were
ok - everything in between was pants - and not nice pants.
Wasn't close enough to see whether ref or Quins were the
problem, bt we shipped too many penalties and opportunities.
Big step up needed before next weekend.

Well that was a real mixed bag. Great start, awful middle and
better end. Anyanwu provided some real go forward, Benson looks
like a real natural talent and Hammond has some real promise.
Lots of rustiness and unfamiliarity from those who haven’t
played much over the course of the season led to a fair few
mistakes as well as a Saints side who were probably a bit better
at the basics for much of the game.
The water carriers were an absolute pain. And not just in last
night’s game, it’s as bad at all professional levels. Referees
need to get a grip on it. It looked like a motorway maintenance
team had appeared on the pitch at times in the second half such
was the sheer number of hi vis clad individuals from Saints in
particular. Occasionally a game threatened to break out amongst
the main affair of watching the players have a drink or a
forward receive some more tape or crank assistance from the hi
vis brigade but this was quickly stamped out as we knocked the
ball on again or gave away a penalty.

The Saints water carriers preventing us taking a penalty by
setting up an encampment on the try line (and, as far as I could
tell, opening a tuck shop) suggested that they were really
       Insulate Britain protestors.

How did the new boys Tuilani & CSW go?

Thought both CSW and Taulani showed promise if not exactly
outstanding. CSW looks like a pretty serious athlete but is
still getting used to the game.

Saints very obviously had a game plan to disrupt our flow by
bringing on water at every opportunity during our attacks. Only
yellow cards for blatant infringements in the red zone wasn’t
really enough of a punishment and they got away with that. The
main problem for us was the scrum. We really didn’t want to take
them as it only lead to penalties against us. This made it much
harder to get possession back when they knocked on or were
       mauled.
Overall I thought there were some excellent
performances and it was good to see what our larger squad can
do. The spectacle would have been far better if Northampton
hadn’t disrupted the match so ridiculously often. I’m glad we
beat them in the end so it meant that their tactics had failed.

Was anyone close enough to see what went wrong with the scrum?
The ref clearly didn't like what we were doing, but I thought he
penalised us several times when we were clearly on top,
including one where we'd won it and Steele was waiting to fish
       it out from White's feet.

It wasn’t clear as to what was wrong with the scrum. I thought
we had gone forward as it went round a couple of times. I did
think we looked a bit smaller as a team but there was something
the ref didn’t like. There was a scrum we won on our 5m line in
the first half which was directly in front of us where you could
see the whole of their pack push us off our own put in in
complete unison with perfect timing. I wonder if we were simply
out muscled with a less experienced front row. (apart from
       Santiago)

       Positives
       Winning
Jones looked a cut above everyone else on the pitch
       Anyanwu looks a real handful
Musk lineout was very decent and prominent around the pitch
Game time for CSW and Taulani
       Hammond in the lineout
Tizard getting around the pitch for involvements
       Mixed
Benson did some great things but (like most flyhalves) struggled
when pack was going backwards and became a static pivot. Was at
his best in first & final 10 minutes
       Poor
Scrum - Auterac when he came on after about 15 mins completely
       dominated.
Morris didn’t really add anything and made mistakes, yes he’s
been long term injured but not very convincing
Wallace & White did nothing to suggest they should be pushing
the 1XV back row / bench

First scrum wasn’t until 20th minute so our scrum was spared for
the first quarter. Saints had more vim and experience there, but
our line out functioned well. We didn’t read refs breakdown
manual and we’re on wrong side of that too, it appeared. Quite a
few anonymous run outs - didn’t really notice CSW when he came
on except his physique and other flanker’s hair, which isn’t
really the memory I wanted to take away…
I thought Wallace played well and had a few good trundles.
Didn’t see enough of the new guys except the centres; Bensons
touch kicking was below par but he landed his most important
       conversions to get the win.
