Eye-opening video - completely proved for me that Rassie Erasmus
is bad for the sport and his ban wasn't long enough!

As well as rugby league, rugby union, sevens, tens, twelves, we
now have the dawn of an exciting new form - forensic rugby. It
combines the usual pleasures of rugby union with the best of
cutting edge crime detection techniques. They should brand it
CSI:Rugby, but I suspect that this would breach copyright
somewhere. The great thing about CSI:Rugby is that you don't
even need to play, you just need a recording of a game that's
already happened.

I find the whole "blame the ref" thing a bit tedious.
Sure, there are times when a ref makes a howler - or makes a
decision that you think is very unfair. (I am thinking of the
Quins v Wuss game a few years back where the AR put up his flag
to indicate that the ball was out of play and all of our players
stopped. The ref disagreed and didn't blow his whistle. A Wuss
player who was oblivious to the AR's flag grabbed the ball and
ran and scored a try - which the ref awarded. And, the ref
refused to go back and check with the TMO.)
But, generally, I am sitting in the stands 50 to 100 yards away
from the breakdown. There is no way that I can see what is
really happening.
So, I usually just go along with the ref's call. Sometimes the
ref is unsighted. Sometimes he gets a 50/50 call wrong. This
happens. But, it happens equally for both teams.
I was at the Richmond v Ampthill game on Saturday. There was a
player sitting in the stand who had a deep, loud voice and
continually bellowed - "off his feet", "in at the side",
"support body weight", "offside", "high tackle", "no arms" etc,
etc. Maybe he was correct. He probably wasn't. But, the one
thing I do know is that he sounded like a pillock. (Hoping that
pillock gets through the profanity filter)
Generally though - the main reason for losing a game is not
scoring enough points. It really has little to do with the ref.
If you don't want to be on the receiving end of a one point loss
- then score a few more tries and put the game beyond reach.
As for the fans in the stadium. Sit back and enjoy the game and,
if you feel the need to shout - then shout support for your team
instead.

Totally agree never sleep. It's a good job players and
supporters never make a mistake isn't it?

You raise a good point never sleep. I have to admit to the
occasional barked reference to the behaviour of the oppo at the
breakdown. Whilst in the moment I’m convinced these
contributions add crystal clarity to the events before my fellow
supporters, I agree the supporter/commentator is generally a
dull thing and can be positively intrusive.

You would have a grievance about the officials if you had the
example of last years six nations England v Wales situation with
two of the Welsh tries. I also didn’t think Zammit’s try was
grounded last week. In fact the only people in the clubhouse
that thought it was a try were all Welsh. They are all try
scoring scenarios which are direct influences on the outcome of
the game. The odd penalty here and there on a 50/50 is
acceptable but when nearly everybody thinks the decision is
wrong then that can’t be right.
Probably the most annoying thing is when the ref won’t
look at something that seemed obviously wrong to all but them.
There have been many of these I remember over the years and we
can bemoan them on here but I don’t think anybody has made an
hour long rant (even though they won) and then another after a
close loss.

Such a reputation may well be unwanted, but would still be
highly deserved.
