Saffers pretending to suddenly discover that a ton of stuff is
missed in the most hard to officiate team sport? You couldn't
make it up.

I think that's a bit tough on May - I'm not suggesting he's in a
great run of form or that he's at peak fitness, but many of
May's performances are leveraged by what happens inside him - if
the ball is booted to the Sarriesphere, then he doesn't get much
of the ball...
It's like the bad press Care used to get when the English scrum
was being marched backwards and he was having to fight a
rearguard action under harassing fire...

Yep, I also think it's slightly harsh to say that historically
he's had one good game for every 3 bad ones. He's not played
very well this series, but for the last few seasons he's been in
good form and put in consistently good performances. In his
early days he was a bit of a one trick pony and his game had
significant weaknesses. I think he's worked on them, and this is
more of a case of a bad run of form rather than being a bad /
inconsistent player

The resilience shown by England on Saturday was really pleasing.
It would have been easy enough in the middle of that onslaught
of penalties to disappear into shells and take a beating but
they didn't. Possibly helped by Lawes less confrontational style
of captaincy?
Smith bought time for the other backs and that certainly seemed
to improve Slade's game. Malins looks really assured and Steward
should be on his way to a huge amount of caps at full back.
Roadrunner May didn't have his best game but he's still got some
credit in the bank for me though Radwan is box office. Youngs
was OK on Saturday, again I think Smith's speed of operating
helped him too while Quirke looks promising. The balance of the
back 5 is a question - do think we could possily do with more of
a Launchbury type partner for Itoje and still need to balance
the back row properly. Dombrandt at 8 would add a proper 8s
skillset as well as negating Launchbury not really being a
lineout jumper. Thought Underhill was quite by his standards.
The continual flow of videos from South Africa is bizarre and
poor form generally. They seem to have taken everything since
the World Cup very personally and can't seem to cope with a) the
fact that occasionally you'll lose a game and b) that refereeing
isn't always completely to the letter of the law - as it'd be
impossible to do so. I do wonder if South Africa's first WC
success in the social media age has given rise to lots of part
time supporters aligning themselves to rugby more strongly and
making a nuissance of themselves online. That and Rassie's
ridiculous rant that sent out the worst kind of message possible
of course.

At the time, I thought that Smith knocked the ball on just
before it gets slapped by Malins. I could be wrong about this -
but, if the ref thought the same thing, then it wouldn't be a
yellow card as they would go back to the knock on.
In reality though I think we did actually get yellow carded
about a minute later. So, there was probably no difference in
the long run.
Kolisi was never going to catch that ball. Yes, he maybe was
looking at the ball, but he was miles away from it. Either way,
yellow or no yellow, it also had little effect on the game as
there wasn't much time on the clock after the penalty.
That is why I think it sounds like sour grapes.

Oh, that is so precious.
And quite literally wrong in so many ways. I'll give them
Itoje's interference on the ground - but I bet there were
instance of that from SA. As for the rest of it...
- Both the Kolisi YC (could easily have been a red) and Etzebeth
pen are entirely correct. It is not enough to be looking at or
reaching for the ball. Before you enter a space where an
opponent might be jumping for the ball, you have to be sure you
have a fair chance of getting it allowing for the presence of
the other player. That's been established for nearly a decade
now.
- The non-card for the high tackle on Etzebeth is also correct.
It's hilarious that they claim he's upright when their own clip
of the moment of contact shows him as practically horizontal.
There's a huge difference between going with a swinging arm into
a player already on the floor versus having a player fall into
you at the point of a tackle. There's enough mitigation, because
Brace's view was that the tackler was in a legal position until
Etzebeth started falling.
- The idea that you get another YC after a YC has already been
issued AND your team has scored is just silly. No official works
that way. They often don't even give a YC after a penalty try
(which by the Laws they should)
- It's interesting that they regard three Springboks kneeling on
a prone player as "on their feet" whereas one England player
laying the ball back through the feet of his teammates after a
tackle is "literally all the England team off their feet"
- Apparently Lawes being there to be hit by a Bok is "starting a
fight".
The music is brilliant, but the highlight of the video for me is
the repeated shots of Marler being completely innocent of
anything and even at one point acting as peacemaker and having a
friendly chat with a Bok. You could tell that someone was just
itching to type "Joe Marler is on the pitch and has not been
carded for anything" "His haircut is clearly foul play" "This is
definite evidence of bias".

Oh and the "Brace prevents Marx from making the tackle"...
Brace is standing at the back of the lineout, in one of the
recommended positions for reffing it. Standing, mind. Now, maybe
he should be reacting faster, but the ball has been whipped away
really quickly. And Marx, on a charge, just runs straight into
him. While it's good practice for the ref to be out of the line
of play when they can, there's only so much they can do, and in
a dynamic situation like that standing still is actually a
pretty good option.
If one of your players is so boneheaded as to run directly into
a static official, then you really can't expect any sympathy.
If I didn't know better, I'd have assumed that this was one of
the spoof deadpan youtube reviews that my son occasionally
makes, but he doesn't have access to that particular feed.

For some reason, I decide to look at the Jantjies incident in
slo-mo. As I see it, he is part of the tackle on Slade, doesn't
release him (penalty England), comes in at the side (penalty
England) and rests (at least) his right arm on the floor beyond
the ball (penalty England).
Apart from that he's completely fine ;)

I think the footage later showed an England player running into
Brace.
