Ideally, Jones would have gone after 2019 world cup, but we have
him until after 2023 World Cup. BBC did a rugby pod in the
middle of the week and they had Steve Hansen on. Such a good
pod, but he said Eddie is desperate to win the world cup in his
own right, not just as a bit part when he was with South Africa.
He thinks the 4 year cycle mentality is wrong and that it should
be about the next game, then the next game and after a
tournament or series, then look at the future, but RFU and Eddie
and single bloody minded on the World Cup.
He also to be fair gave some questionable opinions on the global
calendar which I interpreted seems to skew in favour of NZ (no
surprise).

When you have the luxury of coaching NZ, I think you can focus
one game ahead. But England's relative lack of success in the
RWC inevitably leads to a focus on building a squad over the
cycle. It's not like every other team in the world, apart from
NZ and possibly Wales, is doing anything different.
Also, the cycle of Lions tours and ELVs drives things as well.
NH teams can try out new players during a tour, and the season
after they need to adapt to the ELVs, which drives a new cycle
of innovation and change. There's something to be said for
waiting until you see who is adapting well before making your
squad changes.

Why is Marcus not being able to kick anything?

Why is Marcus playing a position between Farrell at 10 and Slade
at 12 but five metres behind them both?

We had better find some props before SA need Joe and Maku
Vunipola without Genge.

So frustrating seeing Marcus having to play with so little ball.
Youngs doing what he's done for 100 caps, pass badly, kick the
ball away and slow everything down. No point playing Smith if
you don't let him run things. Sooner Eddie goes the better

Its inevitable that England continue to make the same mistakes
which lead to poor performances at the World Cup?

Having been spoiled by Quin’s exciting, positive style this last
year I found myself thoroughly bored by the constant kicking
penalty goals rather than going for the corner. We had obvious
dominance and could have stretched an early lead. I get that it
is tactically practical but nowadays I want entertainment.

Exactly as T Bone said, this smacks of Eddie trying to appease
public opinion and play Smith while also giving his favourite
player the license to still run the show. If you’re going to
play Marcus he needs to be trusted to do what he does for Quins
every week. Although it is satisfying to get a win the way we
went about it after such anticipation was very frustrating.

Sir Clive is saying the same thing in the press ('Why pick
Marcus Smith but then not let him have control?') and it's the
same answer: it's Farrell's team and it's all about him. I can't
believe anyone actually believed Farrell when he said during the
week that “Marcus runs the attack".
