Jamie Roberts - Quins vs Wales!

Roberts had to choose between Quins and Wales. He is not happy
with the Quins board. Seems like he was treated pretty badly.
It's a shame we never really saw the best of him.
He was a world class Inside center in his pomp.

I am sure there are 2 sides to the story, but not a comfortable
read from a Quins point of view.

I don’t doubt Quins gave him a rough time about this and accept
it probably wasn’t handled brilliantly. However his case would
be stronger if he’d ever given the appearance that he gave a
toss about Quins from the moment he arrived (prioritising his
studies over us for some months). I remember a player that
played well within himself apart from the odd televised game and
did not endear himself to Bath fans I know when he moved there
either. Maybe the problem isn’t just the clubs Jamie?

I don't wish to cast any daffodils, but Maximus Decimus Meridius
wouldn't have been whining in a book, however poorly he had been
treated by men in togas...
But it does set the opening scene for the Brown debacle (albeit
with a different cast)...

Having read that it seems to me that Jamie knew exactly what the
situation was and how although we may have indeed had him over a
barrel, PRL also had us over a barrel. If we where really
willing to there and then buy out his contract then I don't
really see the issue other than the fact that maybe we should
have explained it better to him.
Don't get me wrong I am not saying that he shouldn't be upset or
that we treated him well, however as with all things in life
circumstances change and at the time of us agreeing to this side
letter we might have anticipated that PRL would only give a £60k
fine ala North. However if we where then told actually you will
be docked points for every player that plays outside the
international window, then I can certainly understand our change
of heart although I am sure it is difficult for Jamie.
At the end of the day we gave him a way out and he made his
decision, as he said Parkes ended up playing very well and by
rights if Davies had been fit he would not have been in the
squad in the first place. So as much as he can get angry and
blame Quins for the end of his international career the truth is
that Wales where already pushing him out the door.

Can't say I ever liked the bloke and don't feel like he gave his
all for us. The clue is in the line where he says that Wales has
always been his top priority. There's your problem - your club,
whoever it is, should be your top priority and then
international honours follow. You don't just use your club as a
vehicle. Another clue when he says "they were mid table at the
time" rather than "we were mid table".
I walked past Jamie and Tim Visser one afternoon outside the
Stoop, several hours before a home match - neither were deep in
conversation so as I continued walking past I said "good luck
for tonight lads". Tim Visser looked up at me, smiled and said
"thanks mate!" and while JR definitely heard me, he just ignored
me completely and looked the other way. I remember thinking at
the time how unnecessarily rude - even a passing glance would
have been polite enough.
I also love the way he thinks his form had nothing to do with
the end of his Wales career. He was past it by then and had no
chance of adding further caps to his tally. Also, having read
Gatland's book I remember him saying he only ever had suspicions
throughout his time with Wales that one player had been on the
gear... and you only have to look at the size of JR's head
compared with earlier in his career to come up with the
conclusion he's probably used HGH at some point. (My opinion,
not fact).
Anyway, personally I'm glad we didn't offer him a new deal.

Well he also forgets we got the better end of the deal in
getting Taps. Roberts was never good for us and one of the major
let downs.
So I just think I’ll avoid his book and move.

Utter tosh! He never gave his all for Quins so why he expected
to be treated differently to anyone else I can't fathom. I was
very pleased to see the back of the leeching bar steward!

Two sides to every story. I always got the impression that Quins
were more just a convenient base for Roberts to play at, rather
than him really wanting to be here. Very underwhelmed with him,
especially when you look at the way Andre goes about his
business
