It will happen eventually, so we have to make sure the
succession planning is in place. Maybe Mike Brown comes in after
his playing career finishes and maybe Symonds or Marler for the
scrum in two or three years time. Start planning for now and
ease the inevitable passing.
Still see nEV as head coach one day.

Their passion for Quins is plain to see so hope they stick
around for a few seasons yet......

And we were told by many that former players shouldn't move into
coaching their mates! Bomb, Nev, Mulchrone - all have done very
well.

To be fair I think that's still a good rule of thumb. It's a
well trodden path at a number of clubs/international teams with
often a poor outcome.
However, I think exceptions can be fruitful when the player
transitioning to coaching is widely regarded as having been one
of the best to have played in their position, such as NEv and
Adam Jones. The chances are they were doing a lot of coaching as
players already. But it still can't be said that it went well
straight away! Thankfully Quins persevered with them.

Yes and no. All of those guys were in unusual situations -
Mulchrone's career ended very early and he'd already been
working towards being a coach in anticipation of it. Bomb was
brought in specifically to mentor Sinck and Collier with a view
that he'd transition into coaching over time. And Nev, IIRC, was
always slightly apart from the other players - he was looked
after directly by COS (and I assume later JK) rather than by the
regular coaches.
So in each case they weren't going from being one side of the
whistle with their mates to being the one with the whistle.
Contrast with Minty, who did make that transition and needed to
get away from Quins to make it work. I think the move to
Newcastle may also make Brown's transition to coaching easier.
It's hard to generalise. Apparently Marcus was already coaching
his school's 7s team before he started at Quins because the
coaches thought it would be good for his development and
communication. I would almost be prepared to put money down now
that he will move into coaching and be very successful. But then
the coaches also used to do things like tell the other players
to feed him the wrong information or stipulate that he had to
score a try with a kick pass to a prop, because just letting him
play wasn't stretching him enough.
I suspect that to make the transition alongside people you've
played with, you can't be "one of the lads". You probably have
to be someone that the other players already expect hard
feedback and hard decisions from, either because you're a hard
taskmaster already - either the professional or the enforcer -
or because you're the kind of wizard who sees things other
people don't (but can still communicate that). Deano, Cockerill,
Borthwick, Baxter fall into the former camp. NEv and Toonie (and
Bomb when it comes to the scrum) are in the other.

I didn’t think he was going into coaching, hasn't he set up a
player management/agent company with Martin Landajo?
