Grading for Part 1 of the Season

So not sure we could have realistically hoped for a much better
start to the season. 5 wins from 7 games, picking up try bonus
points in each of them. Then in the two games we lost, we picked
up a losing bonus point. Level on points with Sarries in second,
sitting 10 points behind Leicester who’ve played a game more,
whilst 7 points clear of 4th placed Exeter who have played one
more game than us as well.
The two games we lost, Sale we got beaten by side which was
really pumped up for the fixture and on another day still could
have won it (silly clear forward passs missed for their first
try…). Similar story for Sarries game, so disappointing to have
been leading for so long only for them to snatch it at the
death.
Squad wise we are looking good despite having had our depth
tested. I think we’ve seen the emergence of Lamb and Murley who
have probably been our unsung heroes so far. Also Lawday looks a
man reborn and have been really impressed with him. Green
continues to light up the league and teams still don’t really
know how to deal with Big Andre. New signing wise, Walker looks
a quality piece of recruitment with his dynamism in attack and
defence. Whilst Allen has picked up a knock of two, been really
impressed by him and seems a good option with Smith (Edwards has
also looked decent too).
So I reckon we are at about an B+ for the start of the season,
with a good foothold to kick on for the rest of the season.
Post prem cup we have a big derby game at home vs Irish followed
by a trip to Welford Road to face the unbeaten leagues leaders.
They’ll still be unbeaten too as they handily have a week off
right after the internationals… so hopefully after a few weeks
of playing the kids in the cup games, they might be a bit cold
going into that

Think Lawday looks so much better at 8 where he can drift to the
wider channels and pick his carries rather than being asked to
truck it up into heavy traffic. Hopefully Taulani can get some
game time over the next couple weeks and become a realistic
option at 6.

Walker indeed is settling in well. And goes for the full 80
quite often. SGB has really impressed in the last couple of
games.
What has really changed is that there isn't really anyone in the
squad who makes my heart sink when I see them on the team sheet.

Should have been sarries. Could have beaten sale - didn't
deserve to but easily could have stolen that too. I reckon
Bristol second half is the only time we've properly clicked. We
weren't totally convincing against bath, Worcester, falcons or
wasps, but did enough in each game to get 5 points, which is
hugely pleasing.
Top 4 currently not what most would have predicted, with Exeter,
Bristol and sale all having poor starts by their recent
standards.
Overall a decent but not spectacular start. Plenty of room for
improvement, but that's no bad thing.
It'll be good to get our internationals back, plus a few off the
injury list, then try to cement top 4 before 6 nations

SGB has had a good run of games and it shows - he's more
consistent and looks like he wants to play for his place. We
were in control of the scrum for most of the match; shame the
first 25 minutes the line out calling went to pot; but they
recovered.

As last season showed, its about hitting peak form at the right
time. We've had a good start to the season, but plenty of room
for improvement which is encouraging.
Shame about the Sarries result. Definitely felt like one which
got away.
Hopefully we'll see plenty of rotation for the Prem Cup. A well
earned rest for the likes of Lamb and Lawday, and an opportunity
to get others like Lewies and Lowe back up to speed.

Deserve no more than a B for losing to Sarries. Still a good
rating though and I'm pretty happy with our league position.
Discipline and defence are noticeably better this season as
well.

Other teams are scared of playing us - of our pace, skill and
attitude. They know what we can do, and we have proved that we
don't know when we are beaten.

Yep. I’d be inclined to go with a B too, but we’re in a good
position and I’d expect to see a lot of rotation in the cup
which should give our frontline guys a decent rest.
SGB is definitely benefitting from a few starts so I’d keep him
in the cup with Baxter getting 30mins or so in the second
halves.
Lewies and Louw could do with a couple more games under their
belt and I’d be keen to see David get a couple of starts at 15
to give Green a well deserved rest. Could also be a good time to
give Taulani a debut.
Anyone know what the latest is on WEv, Morris and the other
injured players?

Pretty sure Morris has said on a harlequins live that he was
targeting this block of prem cup games as his return.
