I bet he won’t have the bottle to start Smith v OZ and Boks so
most of Marcus’ experience will be warming the bench and with 2
conservatives at 9 and 10 all the talk of open rugby will go out
of the window. And if I was Simmonds I’d tell Jones don’t call me
I’m not interested in playing under you as my coach.

Yes, I think we can all agree that this game is the only one in
which Eddie has the latitude for some serious experimentation.
He won't be able to do it against Oz or the ABs, and given it's
the second week of the six nations, I'm not sure he'll risk much
experimentation for England vs Italy in Italy.
So it seems a bit of a shame that we're starting with a team of
flat-track bullies who'll stick a large number of points over
the opposition but won't actually teach us anything new. Surely
it would have been better to start with the experimental team,
and keep Youngs/Farrell etc... on the bench ready to run on if
the starters ran out of steam or were struggling to make an
impact? I fully agree Farrell and co need to get on the pitch
and need to get some time in which to re-establish connections
with the other players. However you can do that at the end of
the game rather than the beginning. Eddie was talking this week
how the newer players were going to have to adapt to playing in
front of 83,000 people. The players who need this exposure
should get as much of it as possible - it's going to be water of
a duck's back for the likes of Youngs and Farrell, they don't
need any more experience of a big crowd.
Also, playing the more experimental side first is probably going
to make the match itself more interesting/entertaining. We all
know the starting 15 are going to stomp over the opposition,
going to look good running up a big score. Eddie was talking
about them playing entertaining rugby enough to stop the dreaded
Mexican waves. This starting team looks ideal for a bit of kick
tennis. But even watching a team running in score after score
gets boring after a while if the entertainment factor is
       missing.

I predict Youngs passes slowly from the base of ruck/scrum after
the ball has been sitting there and the ref is screaming use it!
Farrell will catch it stationary pass it to Manu who will truck
it up. Then either if Tonga are running out of puff there will
be some room incase Slade might get an offload. However more
likely Youngs will turn up very late to the ruck and decide it
is slow ball and box kick it.
I would have played the new bloods on from the off and brought
on the multi cap chaps as required. All I can hope is that Tonga
take a leaf out of Sarries books and put a few late (legal
according to the TMO) hits in on the Flyhalf. Perhaps that will
encourage him to move when he gets the ball although I doubt it
       D-Quins
       telegraphing what the play

I don’t recall any late hits on the fly-half that were deemed
       legal. Can you remind me?

       > Owen Farrell has tested positive for Covid. He will be
retested again today and continues to isolate.

We might be seeing Marcus on the pitch sooner than first
       thought...

Just a shame he doesn’t have Dombrandt or Marchant with him.

Twitter seeming to think that Furbank will replace Farrell at 10
with Atkinson coming onto the bench.

I defo can see Furbank starting at 10. Smith is 95% fit
according to Jones, so he is holding him back until a cameo, in
       the second half.
Also, it would be good to see what the squad's utility player,
can do at 10. We may well need that scenario in a world cup
       group game!

       I agree. Smith's on the bench for a reason - fitness/lack of
       squad training.

Im pleased with this development, but not in the obvious im
happy at OF getting covid, more so for the forced change.
Furbank at 10 makes sense. He isn't in my view good enough to be
a starting player in terms of some big series, as if it was a
straight choice I think Steward and Malins are ahead of him in
the FB stakes. Having him around as a jack of all trades bench
player who can fill a position in an emergency is probably going
to be his realistic shot at getting England game time anyway so
we might as well see how he goes.
