       Turning points
   DIR By: J Scott

A little gutted we didn’t get more than a point yesterday
however for me there were 3 key turning points:
       1. Allen going off - Edwards didn’t do too much wrong but is not
the same class as Allenor Smith and our play suffered because of
       it.
       2. Andre going off - Jones is an international class player,
however when Andre went off we lost all attacking shape it just
       shows his presence and skill.
       3. Earl coming on - He was a real nuisance both sides of the
ball, winning vital turns overs and protecting their ball, I
thought the game swung in their favour when he came on.
Overall a winnable game for both teams and worthy of 2nd v 3rd.
Just hope we don’t lose Allen and Andre for next week.

Earl improved their play but he's a guaranteed couple of
penalties to his opposition which, unfortunately, for us didn't
       amount to much benefit.

I feel about this game much the same way I felt about the second
Bristol and Exeter games last year: disappointed that Quins
didn't win, but feeling that on another day we could have.
There were several encouraging points - particularly Botta and
Lawday's performances - but most of all that Quins contained the
Saracens power game and a little better decision making
(arguably on both sides of the whistle/TMO truck) could have
made that a 5 point win.
I think the substitutions cost us. Edwards did a decent job for
a third string, and Allan's second head injury in as many games
played is worrying. But I kind of feel that it was when Lewies,
Jones and Wilco came on that Quins lost a bit of defensive
shape. The decision to kick the drop goal and penalty were
probably mistakes with hindsight - I was fairly confident that
we could have eaten up the clock in Sarries' end of the field,
but those decisions gave them territory.
The final try looked like a defensive system error - we simply
had too few people on the left hand side of the field.
These are all things that will improve as the returning players
reintegrate and that Tabai and the team can coach. It felt to me
that the team had learned from the Sale game, which was similar
       in style.

A big turning point for me was at 12-6, pen in front of the
posts and we go for the corner. They turnover from the lineout
and go on to get a pen in our half which makes it 12-9 instead
of 15-6. There are sometimes when taking the 3 points makes
       sense.

Frustrating game really. Excellent first half, average second
half as we got sucked into their game plan.
The drop goal and kicked penalty, I agree were poor decisions,
which I stated at the time to the annoyance of some around me.
Three more phases on the drop goal attack and Sarries were going
to keep infringing. Then it's down to 14 and find the hole.
The penalty was the same, stick to our plan and the chance will
come. Danny made some poor decisions all day with some pointless
grabbers and poor box kicks. I'd have bought Steele on and given
him 30 mins and I believe he would have created opportunities.
Danny needs a mental rest for a few weeks.

I can't help feeling that gifting them 9 points was what lost us
the game. They were genuinely poor in the first half and it was
barely a contest save for the dense penalties we gave away. I
don't think we learned much from the Sale game either. We're in
for some tough times if we have to play many games without Smith
       and Allan.

Quite a few turning points really.
Allan off probably the biggest one.
Start of second half, we don't appear switched on. Pretty soft
       try.
The drop goal - we were in a good position. We'd normally opt
for a scrum there. Maybe the absence of Joe and Dombrandt played
a part in Danny's decision making?
Decision to kick for goal not touch. Edwards' kicking from hand
/ restarts had been poor. I had no confidence when he lined up.
A kick to touch could have resulted in a bonus point try and
probable win. Would also have used up time and possibly resulted
in further infringements. When we made that decision, I bet it
gave Sarries a mental lift - they don't think they can score
against us again, and we've got them to reject their previously
       attacking mindset.
Change in tactics to box kicking a lot. Horrible tactic,
reverting to the Gustard era. We're not good at it, and it's not
what helped us win the title.
Certain replacements coming on. Jones was poor. Lightweight in
attack and a massive step down on Andre. Lewis didn't look fit.

I couldn't make sense of the Dino yellow card. Any thoughts
       about that?

His arm caught the Saracens player in the head, so it's a
       yellow.
It's frustrating because you could find that happening at
countless rucks. Lewies got smacked clean on the head when he
       won his turnover, for example.

Andre coming off lost us any real go forward for sure, BUT for
me the reason we didn’t prevail was the apparent change in the
game plan in the second half to kick it away rather than play
and go through the hands as in the first half.
I am sure the coaches had their reasons to change the plan but
to my mind we just played into Sarries hands by doing it.
