As Wirralquin says, you have to actually play. You could be
selected in every match day squad for the entire 6N but if you
don't set foot on the pitch during the match then you're not
captured!

I'm not sure about that.
8.3 For the purposes of this Regulation, a Player is deemed to
have played for the senior fifteen-a-side National
Representative Team or the next senior fifteen-a-side National
Representative Team of a Union if:
(a) He is selected for such team to play in an International
Match against the senior fifteen-a-side National Representative
Team or the next senior fifteen-a-side National Representative
Team of another Union (or in a fifteen-a-side international
Match against another Union’s senior or next senior Touring
Squad during a World Rugby approved International Tour) [I] and
is present at the Match played by that team either as a
replacement, substitute or a playing member of that team [/I]
and has, at the time of the Match, reached the age of
majority...
I left out the rest because it makes no difference.

Very interesting! I could well be wrong then... I know there are
instances where players have been named in international squads
but then switched allegiances. I'm sure there have been one or
two that have appeared in match day squads, not played, then
switched... but I also could be imagining it!

Well, the rules haven't always been the same - Steve Bachop
switched from Samoa to New Zealand and back in the 90s - all
perfectly legit then as he qualified for both through birth and
lineage. I believe the regulations were tightened up and made
more explicit after the Shane Howarth fiasco - All Black who
"invented" a Welsh granny and played 19 times for Wales before
it came to light and he was banned. :)

I seem to remember that there is some sort of 7s loophole.
I am not sure of the details - but, it is something like:
1. a player plays rugby 15s for England
2. he switches to 7s and plays in due to having a French
mother, he gets picked for the French 7s team
3. After a set amount of time, the player could play 15s for
France too
Has anyone else heard of this - or am I imagining it?

Yes that one still exists. Fekitoa has done that and would
probably have made his debut for Tonga except he's injured. You
have to have not played for your current country for 3 years
first, I think.

I believe the player has to specifically play in an Olympic 7s
event. I don’t think you could just play in the World Series and
switch.

That's right.
Charles Piutau missed out on the Olympic 7s qualifying
tournament because it clashed with Bristol's semi against us so
he has to wait until the next Olympics.

I would have thought he would only become "English" once he's
received an England cap. Until then think he could play for
whoever he's qualified to play for!
