There's little point picking Smithy if Farrell's at 12, the last
6-7 years have shown that if OF is picked (either at 12 or 10)
then the play (and the team in general) has to revolve around
him. If Smith is there to play the Ford role (to give the ball
to OF) then there's little point playing him. If Smith is there
to play his Quins game then why play the robotic Farrell next to
him? He's just a handbrake on any creativity. Play Tuilagi in
the Esterhuizen role with Marchant or Slade at 13.

Oh no I agree, however as i mentioned my list was made with EJ
in mind. IF he is to drop Farrell it will be a big step to
actually thinking EJ is building towards the world cup, as I
still have the feeling come 6 nations we will have Youngs,
vunipolas etc back starting.
Atkinson could be left field pick, but personally whilst he
might have had a good start to the season, a 30+ year old
debutant isn't building for the future

I can understand that thinking but now Curry is in the squad, it
would be pointless to have him hold tackle bags for 4 weeks.
And would you say the same about Itoje or do you feel he has
something to prove?

Yes, except that knowing Eddie he probably told him to work on
his lineout calling.

Not sure I agree. When England were at their most effective in
2018/2019, Ford was calling the phases and was taking the ball
when the attack was on but using Farrell as first receiver when
it needed to be cleared or there needed to be another phase of
forward play. The wheels came off a bit in 2020 and 21 but a big
part of that was how little quality gametime the Sarries players
had had.
Eddie doesn't do much by chance. The clear out after the SA tour
resulted in some very deliberate changes in the style of play,
particularly around the back row and back three and it's very
unlikely he hadn't planned that. I think the same is happening
here - you don't bring in a player like Smith and then not make
the most of what he can do, especially when Ford is in form as
well.
For me, a lot may come from the time Smith and Farrell spent
together on the Lions tour - reportedly they spent a lot of
their downtime just talking rugby. If they've begun to build an
understanding I think it will translate to the pitch. Marcus
certainly isn't afraid to tell much more senior players what to
do in the Quins squad, and the way he ran the show in his one
Lions game suggests he's not afraid to do it with players he
doesn't know so well.

If Jones is true to form, he will select Curry at 8, Youngs at 9
and Farrell at 10. As he has said, the young guys need to earn
their place in the team.
Of course, Smith, Randall and Domborant / Simmonds deserve to
play from the start. However, there has been far too much
fanfare for that to happen. Jones, is his own man and will
select the team he wants, not matter what everyone else thinks.
I hope I am wrong.

If I was picking...
For Tonga:
1 Genge
2 Dolly
3 Stuart
4 Ewels
5 Hill
6 Ludlam
7 Underhill
8 Simmonds
9 Randall
10 Smith
11 Malins
12 Atkinson
13 Marchant
14 Radwan
15 Steward
16 Blamire
17 Davison
18 Sinckler
19 Martin
20 Dombrandt
21 Quirke
22 Slade
23 Freeman
For Aus/SA:
1 Marler
2 George
3 Sinckler
4 Itoje
5 Lawes
6 Curry
7 Underhill
8 Dombrandt
9 Quirke
10 Smith
11 May
12 Tuilagi
13 Marchant
14 Radwan
15 Steward
16 Dolly
17 Genge
18 Stuart
19 Hill
20 Simmonds
21 Randall
22 Slade
23 Malins
...but we all know he'll pick Lawes at 6, Curry at 8, Youngs at
9, Farrell at 12 - and stifle any real progress as a result.
Also, I fully acknowledge my bias on the subject of Slade vs
Marchant - both are consistently brilliant for their clubs and
Slade is no doubt the man in possession of the 13 shirt and will
of course be picked. I won't be upset when he is, but I'd love
March to get a run in the England midfield, especially outside
of Smith and Tuilagi (if - big if - Manu can stay fit). Maybe if
he gets in for the Tonga game, that will be his chance to
impress EJ...

He's not going to pick Curry at 8. He's dropped Billy, he'll
pick Dombrandt or Simmonds.

Eddie has typically gone for playmakers at 10, 15 and in the
centre. If we play Manu and March, I think he’ll put Malins at
15.

I think both Eddie and Malins see Malins' immediate future as
being on the wing. It's where he played his best rugby for
Bristol and I wasn't surprised to see Sarries move him there for
the shellacking of Bath. Steward is a rock solid 15 who can be a
real asset at 15.
