As a callow student, being the only patron wearing an England
shirt in a Newport pub was ... eye-opening

Many many moons ago I was in Wales visiting a girlfriend on a
six nations weekend. If I recall, Wales lost at home to Scotland
and England won the title. When we went out to the pub later
with a group of her friends I was told to sit in the corner and
keep quiet and not speak loudly in case someone not in the group
heard my accent. Fine by me as I didn’t have to buy any “pints
of dark” all evening.

Funny how Welsh or Scottish fans can watch a game kitted up in
England no issue. The reverse and you get stick

More the minority. A very noisy minority amplified by social
media warriors, but not all by any stretch.

in addition to being a Quins season ticket holder I am also a
season ticket holder at a football club. One of the joys of
watching rugby is being able to go to away games, have drinks
with the home fans, or sit next to them in the stadium wearing a
team shirt and never having trouble.
I was one of the Quins 500 at Ashton Gate and after the game
went in to 2 of the pubs just next to the stadium wearing my
Quins shirt. Both were completely full of Bears fans and given
that they had just had their hearts ripped out, they could not
have been more welcoming & friendly and actually wishing Quins
well for the Twickenham game.
When Bristol City play at home, those same 2 pubs are full of
City fans. ( I have been 4 times to AG to watch football) If I
went into those pubs after the game, in an away shirt, having
beaten City 5-4 after being 4-0 down (or something similar) it
would end with a one way trip to A&E .. it would be a
catastrophic mistake.
No one should give Sarries fans grief, we should cherish this
ability to mingle & socialise in a friendly atmosphere.

There's a small but awful subset of Welsh fans who go way beyond
what's acceptable, and for some reason it seems to contain a
disproportionate number of shrill middle aged women.
At the ill-fated 2015 RWC game we had a pair of them directly
behind us who managed to kick their pints over us at some point
during their endless chorus of "Way-ulls" with no attempt at an
apology, and then one of them stood up at the end and fell over
on top of us. We caught her and stood her up without further
harm.
But the one that really sticks with me was being in a pub in
Edinburgh watching England-Italy before a Scotland-Wales game (a
good mate is Scottish and likes to go to this fixture for his
birthday), wearing nothing that would give away my allegiances
and having said nothing. A (female, middle aged) Welsh fan
walked past me on the way to the bar or the loo and, apropos of
nothing, turned to me and expressed the opinion that the England
team were members of the Cambridge University Netball Team.
You get good natured banter from 99% of rugby fans, boorish
entitlement from a small number of England fans, blank denial
from quite a few Saracens fans, but I've only seen only that
level of vitriol and bad feeling from Welsh fans for some
reason.

Variation on that theme - if in Wales and in a shop, see if you
are "thanked" by staff with "There We Area Then"...
