       Wayne Barnes

i know there are many on here who love the above referee but i'm
getting sick and tired of his antics. i don't care whether it's
quins v bristol or new zealand v australia , he also wants and
strives to be the centre of attention .if a game of rugby
finishes and you don't mention the referee then imho he/she has
had a good game , however if we pump brizzle and there are still
comments about the referees performance then it's time for
him/her to hang up their whistle

Honestly this post is absolutely moronic.
Wayne didn't have his most commanding performance yesterday,
sure, however he certainly made fewer mistakes than the players.
Refereeing is often a series of 50/50 calls, and giving either
way could be correct. He remains one of the best referees in the
country, and absolutely doesn't strive to be the centre of
attention. Bear in mind that modern refereeing also has to be
something of a "show" because they need to be clear to
spectators in the ground, and give enough detail for the TV
       cameras.
Sam Larner wrote a great thread on refereeing on Twitter the
other day, I suggest you take a look.

I dont think he had that bad a game. Look on our board when we
were losing....Barnes was terrible. Have a look over at the
Bristol board when we started to tonk them.....was Barnes fault.
Refs will make mistakes. He got some stuff wrong last night but
the constant whining about refs gets boring.

Having watched the game live, when I thought Barnes got quite a
lot wrong, and then on TV afterward, it was plain he got most
everything right, notwithstanding the whingeing by Brizzle
supporters. Sure, a couple of (non-critical) errors, maybe, that
some would probably put down to "interpretation" but overall he
is a class act as a referee and we were lucky to have him (it
could have been someone like Ian Tempest, for example).

Generally, you’re at the game and you think the ref has made some
bad calls. Then you go home and watch the replay and realise
that you were wrong and he was right. Not always but mostly. Of
course it’s worse when a wrong call leads to your team losing by
a try or pen but how often does that happen.

I was particularly annoyed in the first half when we were
chasing the game, as WB was stood right next to a ruck and
watched the stealing Bris player (can't remember who) hinge at
the hips, his elbows and entire forearms all over the floor and
blow a pen against us. Just unforgiveable.
But as the game went on I felt he evened out. He got all of the
forward pass calls spot on for both sides. I don't mind honest
mistakes but obvious clear law infringements that are far from
50/50s really annoy me. There may be directives from World Rugby
to do this or that for a better spectacle etc. but in that case
what's the point in the law book?
I've also noticed as OP has that WB does enjoy being in the
spotlight more than he used to. Lots of referees seem to develop
it later in their careers. There's an unjustified smugness with
some decisions (not against Quins in particular, but against
anyone) which no referee should have (but plenty of others do).
Steve Walsh used to be the worst for it but there are a few
others today who display the same camera loving characteristics.

Not really! Ignore Ben Kay wittering on about lines on the
pitch, it's whether the ball comes out of the hands forward. It
didn't for the Dombrandt try that was chalked off. It did for an
offload by Quins leading to a try that wasn't given as forward.
And Barnes needed to be told by the TMO that the inside pass
       from Northmore was forward, too...
Barnes has a lot of experience and will get more things right
than wrong, but he's not the superb ref he used to be. Not
fussed about his character, I quite like how he deals with
players though in the past I've spoken to ex-refs / assessors
who think he's too matey with them; whatever works IMO!
In the heat of the game, as a spectator and a fan of one side
it's always infuriating to spot one thing that you think is an
obvious penalty and for it not to be given (e.g. Marler being
locked on over the ball for several seconds in the lead up to
their second try) but there's always the chance that those much
closer to the action can see something we can't. Or it's just an
       obvious error :-)

Yes I heard Ben Kay say that and do agree with you, though can
see why it was given as forward (ball forward movement
accentuated by Lynagh coming to a dead stop as he passed it) so
I don't feel too aggrieved at that one not going our way. I must
have missed the second one you mention, which try was that?
Regarding Northmore's offload I can see why he needed TMO input
as he was obviously running behind the play so very difficult to
tell what's forward and what's not from the front or the back.
But by and large I don't think he'll get a rap on the knuckles
for any of those decisions by his assessor.

Substitute Bish for Barnes, keyboard for whistle and this board
for game of rugby and this post rings so true!

Spot on about the Northmore one - it was foward but given the
speed of the break, of course the ref needs to check in with the
       TMO
