Arguably the “comeback” Quins started at LI and then Wasps, both
masterminded in closing stages by Smith…

Yep. 100% agree. All three will be a big test of our style.
I definitely won’t be expecting BP wins, but I think we’re
absolutely capable of winning all three.
If we can show that we can win tight games against the physical
sides who want to beat us up, that could be huge in us retaining
the title.

This is absolutely spot on. What was more impressive about the
second half was that a lot of what wasn't good in the first half
got corrected, other than the lineout which Bristol had our
number on a lot of the time, although even that was a little
better if never 100% clearn. I saw two major adjustments that
changed the game.
One was to stop being quite as aggressive in defence and have
them move side to side. Lost in all the champagne rugby is that
for the first 5 minutes of the half, we didn't have the ball.
They did. We kept everything in front of us and moved them side
to side, knowing they weren't going to attack the line, but try
and throw it round us, using our aggressive defence and guys
rushing out of the line against us. We basically didn't do this
after half time, only in exceptional cases did someone (in this
case Marcus - this is an underrated part of his game - and
Kenningham) fly out and hit Sheedy hard. Bristol ran themselves
ragged, but left to right for no gain. This tired them out and
laid the groundwork for the 35 minutes that followed. They were
completely gassed by 50 minutes, which against us is a recipe
for disaster. That started with defence.
The second more minor one was that it seemed as if Dino Lamb was
tasked with manning up on Sinckler. They use Kyle like we used
to use him here; sometimes dummy runner, sometimes tanking it up
and sometimes as a pivot because he has great hands and is a a
carrying threat, so draws defenders. I lost count of the amount
of times Dino hit him, but it was a lot. It took Kyle out of the
game and kept them going sidewards. They fatigued, and the rest
is history.
Obviously the players executing to an incredible standard helps.
We played a clean game in the second half. No penalties.
Incredible discipline.
This is a special group of players with incredible skills who
are also incredibly fit. As others have mentioned, they are
young. There is a succession plan in place basically at every
position. To not call out two guys who aren't Marcus (about whom
nothing more needs to be said - first name on the England Team
sheet or something is wrong) but either side of him would be
remiss.
Dombrandt already has more premiership tries than Nick Easter
does in about 1/3rd of the games, but is also more complete a
player already and he hasn't even turned 25 yet. Commentary team
compared him to Dwayne Vermeulen yesterday, which defensively is
a hell of a comparison. I don't think that's the best part of
his game though; his hands and speed are something Vermeulen
maybe doesn't have. Marcus gets more of the headlines but this
guy is just as good. Were he from New Zealand, he'd be a
household name across the world.
Alongside him, Esterhuizen is a phenomenon. Incredible hands,
cannon of a boot, brick wall in defence and hoovers up turnovers
off the floor. Prone to moments of madness, yes, but a special
talent in midfield. Has absolutely everything we've lacked since
peak JTH carrying it up and knocking guys over between 2009-13
but brings so much more than that too. Glad he's ours.
We'll not get many better nights than that, especially after
half time, for as long as we all come to the stoop or watch the
men in quarters. We've been spoiled by this lot, though. 50
tries in the last 7 home games, a joy to watch. Long may it
continue.

Agree very much with your post Kid. That 6 minute period of
defence at the start of the second half was crucial, from both
scoreboard and psychological viewpoints.
Quins do seem to be perfecting the art of mental disintegration
of opponents, in the style of the 90s Aussie cricket team.

Your supporters have always been very humble since the return to
the premiership and the recent run of success which along with
Exeter is nice to see. Even more interesting was the supporters
on your board calling out many of the issues after the Quins
loss last season that have all come true to an extent. Other
than the saracens board it’s nice to see other supporters
talking about Quins in such a positive way.

Well played, you certainly got folk talking, Bristol's optional
defence won't be there every week, but this season is certainly
kicking off with a bang.

Really good points about the defence at the start of the half. I
was saying to my daughter that for all the possession, they had
practically no territory gain, that was outstanding.
At risk of upsetting Yareet (again) this is a good time for the
Enya game as their big Bok names are away and to get the AJ Bell
fixture out of the way whilst we're playing well.
If we are still unbeaten by 5pm on the 5th December (Tigers
away) then I can't see anyone wanting to play us.
Joe Marler must be the best player in the Northern Hemisphere at
the moment, his all court game is just phenomenal. And in Marcus
Smith we have to rejoice that we have a truly once in a
generation superstar.

Are some of the Sale SA internationals not back and selected for
this weekend? Either way, Yareet posted saying they were all
back on training so maybe next week isn’t the best time to be
visiting the AJ Bell after all?!! Either way, if we can put in a
performance away at Sale I’ll be happy - it’s not been a happy
hunting ground recently!
