Very good but it would be really great if the Club could produce
their own official version of last season like they did in 2012.
Any news on this?

I am slightly less gushing, due to me being a rather tedious
robot. It is certainly entertaining though, and I learned
something for sure, although I am not convinced that all the
cause and effect relationships he claimed to unravel are real.
Definitely worth watching (once).

If you strip away his presentation style (which for me is a bit
hit and miss, though it grows on you over time) and the
secondary point he’s making about issues with the wider rugby
culture, what you’re left with is the question of “how did Quins
turn their season around?”
It happened mid-season, so it wasn’t down to a change of playing
personnel, or indeed coaching personnel, bar the exit of Gussy.
As his before and after clips illustrate, the attacking tactics
didn’t really change - which if nothing else is a really
interesting thing to take away from the video. But what did
change - and the clips illustrate - was four things:
1) A less conservative defensive mindset. The willingness to be
aggressive in defence, accepting that a greater chance of
conceding a break was a fair trade off for a greater chance of
forcing a turnover and backing themselves to get points or at
least territory from those turnovers
2) How committed the players were to executing the tactics, and
how Marcus in particular has learned when not to try to force it
3) How long they were able to sustain the pace of play needed to
execute the tactics
4) Much, much better running - not so much in the lines
themselves but in the level of variation in how our players
position themselves, move onto the ball and move after taking
the ball.
Then there are the contributory factors for how that change was
made.
(1) Squidge doesn’t really explore, other than to note that it
was almost certainly a result of Gustard leaving, but my guess
is that the emphasis on attack-from-defence has probably come
from Nick Evans’ All Black heritage and Joe Marchant’s
sabbatical in the land of the long white cloud. I hadn’t made
the connection before, but prior to Gustard leaving we were
wondering when Nacho Ramjet would rediscover his form… and by
the end of the season he was probably the most devastating
player in the league when it comes to transition play. The
licence to get up there and cause chaos has unshackled his rugby
brain.
(4) Is also a Nick Evans thing - but what’s great is that he’s
got the whole squad doing it.
(3) Is pretty clearly the result of the Protecht data and the
white vest. Whether that all happened post-Gustard or whether it
was in train beforehand but the effects started to come through
in the second half I don’t know, but it’s clearly the way
forward for rugby as a whole.
(2) Is the one where I think there’s a cycle of cause and effect
and multiple things contribute. When you have fitter, fresher
players with more licence to try things, coupled with the
cultural shift (and as Owen Eastwood reiterates in the podcast
linked in another thread, a realisation that a coach many of the
players liked had lost his job because of the need to get back
to Quins’ style of play, and that it was now on the players to
make that count) and small skill adjustments that make
everything more likely to work, the frustration and overplaying
fall away and the confidence to make the most outrageous things
stick grows.
We know what changed on the pitch, and we know some of the
things that changed behind the scenes. Unless there’s another
training ground shift that we’re not aware of, it’s pretty
reasonable to look at those changes and form a view of how one
set led to the other.

Yeah, that's Squidge's biggest failing - he's obsesed with all
the "just so" stuff, where he's convinced himself that
everything happens for a reason, and will take a result and
backtrack until he can shoehorn the events into a carefully
explained plan that may or may not actually represent what
happened on the pitch. Thinking everything that happens is
deliberate can only go so far.
However... he almost never does that in this video. The one time
he does, it's actually a fairly obvious one - the kick tennis vs
Exeter. Quins' masterplan there was not actually all that great,
as it basically gave Exeter multiple opportunities to do the
right thing when you've got an injured player, which is... kick
the ball out. Exeter's idiocy ultimately cost them, and Quins
probably should've tried to manipulate the space without handing
possession to Exeter.
The rest of the video is refreshingly different to his others
and there's little to argue with, and plenty of really good
observations. One of his best.
