Um, I guess there is continuity. Replace a Petulant thug with a

Think that's a pretty fair call. Farrell shouldn't be a
guaranteed starter, whereas Itoje definitely should

Him being a Saracen aside, Itoje is neither dim nor a thug. Hell
of a player though.

I'm less concerned about the options to replace him as captain
(I'd be happy with either Itoje or T Curry) and more concerned
at the lack of options England have at 12. That's the actual
problem for me - I'm not sure Farrell would lose his place even
if the captaincy was taken from him.
Lots of good young English ICs graduating from Prem academies
this/last season so in a few years I think we'll be okay there
but at present is there anyone with a serious claim to Farrell's
England 12 jersey? I'm not sure there is - Tuilagi would be my
preferred option but he never stays fit long enough or gets
himself suspended...

Hmmmm, much as I love watching Smith, I don't think I'd want to
make him captain of Quins or England. Too much of a burden for
him personally.
Also - I dislike having one player responsible for play making,
kicking and the captaincy, like with Farrell. It makes any
injuries, absences or loss of form even more serious for the
team.
You can still build around Smith as the playmaker and a senior
player, without making him the captain. Last season, Marcus was
involved in all of the tactical on field discussions for Quins;
he's clearly a leader on the pitch. Just save him from the
extra media duties, commitments with sponsors and formalities
that come with being England captain.

I agree with Jedzi. No need to make Smith the Captain, but you
can still build the next generation of team around him. As for
Itoje as Captain, I'm unconvinced. I haven't seen anything from
him that says he would be able to build a rapport with Referees
that's a major part of the captains' role. He always seems to be
on the edge of pushing things too far on-field with his
excessive cheering every decision/turnover/etc.
