Long time no post..........
There is an obvious and cheap rebrand here. One day you are the
Chiefs, the next with some judicious use of Tippex and coloured
masking tape, you are the Chefs. You can still wear wacky head
gear too. The more committed fan can buy Chef's overalls and a
pair of Crocs in which to attend matches. Jo Simmonds can yell
"Service" to his scrum half and they can even sign Luke "Greg"
Wallace to loiter on the wing and say "Rugby doesn't get tougher
than this!".
This marketing.....it's dead easy.

No, next. What a bad faith article.
NZ doing the haka is embracing their own culture. Maori groups
have been involved in discussions regarding the haka, and even
have had rights to the haka awarded to them -

Contrast this to Native American groups telling Exeter that the
branding is wrong and should be changed and the difference is
obvious.
Saracens is an interesting one. If you were branding a new team
nowadays you certainly wouldn't use it. The fezzes are a bit
weird, but clearly don't hold the important significance of the
Native American headdress. It's on the spectrum of cultural
appropriation, but probably not too bad.
Importantly, Saracens' official branding doesn't play into the
worst aspects of their moniker. Again, contrast this with Exeter
who are obviously aware of the issues with their branding
releasing a cup jersey last year with two massive Native
American faces wearing headdresses. It's a giant two fingers to
the groups telling them it's insensitive.

I would argue that the Haka isn't cultural appropriation given
that the Maori themselves have stated their happiness for it to
represent all of New Zealand. Don't forget that individual
schools, rugby clubs, heck even wedding parties perform Hakas
across NZ without an issue. It's a part of everyday life in NZ,
regardless of the race of the people performing it.
Now, is it over idealized and venerated by World Rugby with
their rules regarding how teams are and aren't allowed to
respond to it (with fines as Joe found out)? Absolutely. You
only need to look back to the footage of an All Blacks team from
the 70s to see how far its changed over the years. Also I think
the issue is that it's now too familiar. Times were that teams
and fans would only see a Haka once every four or five years if
they were lucky. Now, due to the Summer tours being easier to
watch, alongside the Rugby Championship, Autumn Internationals
and the RWC, we see it almost too much and the "mystique" of the
Haka is gone.

Sorry, Quanks, I seem to have repeated what you were saying! I
guess we were both typing at the same time!
As for Sarries, I agree with you in that it's on the "scale"
somewhere, but far lower than Exeter. I believe Sarries changed
the logo & colours slightly to lessen the "impact". The worst
part now would probably be the camel mascot, given that "camel
jockeys" is a derogative term.
