Whilst I do agree that the headdress's could be seen as
insensitive to the plight and effective genocide that the Native
Americans suffered historically and the on-going injustices they
face in the USA in particular, I feel there should be some give
and take.
Perhaps Exeter could make an annual donation to a Native
American historical trust or similar so show good faith in using
the symbols.
Saying that, our team Harlequins 'name' leans from French
history, yet we are not French.........are we also taking from
another culture...and that the "Hellequin" was blackface could
we be seem as racist in these more enlightened days? (I think
not but some could make that argument):
"The name Harlequin is taken from that of a mischievous "devil"
or "demon" character in popular French passion plays. It
originates with an Old French term herlequin, hellequin, first
attested in the 11th century, by the chronicler Orderic Vitalis,
who recounts a story of a monk who was pursued by a troop of
demons when wandering on the coast of Normandy (France) at
night.[5][6] These demons were led by a masked, club-wielding
giant and they were known as familia herlequin (var. familia
herlethingi). This medieval French version of the Germanic Wild
Hunt, Mesnée d'Hellequin, has been connected to the English
figure of Herla cyning ("host-king"; German Erlkönig).[7]
Hellequin was depicted as a black-faced emissary of the devil,
roaming the countryside with a group of demons chasing the
damned souls of evil people to Hell. The physical appearance of
Hellequin offers an explanation for the traditional colours of
Harlequin's red-and-black mask.[8][9] The name's origin could
also be traced to a knight from the 9th century, Hellequin of
Boulogne, who died fighting the Normans and originated a legend
of devils.[10] In Cantos XXI and XXII from Dante's Inferno there
is a devil by the name of Alichino.[5][11] The similarities
between the devil in Dante's Inferno and the Arlecchino are more
than cosmetic. The prank-like antics of the devils in the
aforementioned antics reflect some carnivalesque aspects.[11]
The first known appearance on stage of Hellequin is dated to
1262, the character of a masked and hooded devil in Jeu da la
Feuillière by Adam de la Halle, and it became a stock character
in French passion plays.[12]"

What I find really strange is that Exeter are going to end up
changing this imagery and branding eventually. Sure Tony Rowe
might want to cling onto it since it was his re-brand and he
doesn't see the problem, but the pressure for change is only
going in one direction. Exeter could be pro-active and make the
change themselves early - it would probably help with fans
acceptance if they didn't feel the club was forced. Instead,
it's going to come far later than it should and fan buy-in to
the rebrand will be met with resistance. I imagine the "Tomahawk
chop" chant is going to stick around for some time, for example.
If Exeter had a primary sponsor like DHL at Quins, there would
be pressure coming from them. With SW Comms also being owned by
Rowe, they're insulated from this to an extent. However, I can
imagine that CVC aren't massively keen on the branding and
that's where I'd try and focus efforts at the Exeter Chiefs for
Change campaign. Ultimately it was the sponsors/retailers that
finally drove the Washington Football Team name change and it's
going to be the same here.

Personally I don't give a tinkers cuss what they call themselves
or have as logo etc.
Still a good club and play some good rugby.
Far to many snowflakes and whingers about these days.

After getting 'woke' 'whingers' and 'snowflake', I only need
'nanny state', 'virtue-signalling' and 'political correctness
gone maaaad' to fill my Culture Warrior-cliche bingo card. The
irony is the same people are 'whinging snowflakes' over the
slightest thing like footballers kneeling down for a few
seconds.
