Yep, the luxury we have in being "First world" to discuss the
issues of the choices made by commercial entities freely and
whether they represent the values we aspire to.
To add: Exeter's football team is known as the Grecians or
Greeks so they like the historic names apparently.

Quite often I wonder whether we’re far too sensitive nowadays.
But I have to admit to finding the head-dress thing and the war
chant, instead of being cultural appropriation, more than a bit
mocking and not respectful. And obviously the fans look like
       prats.

kind of symbolic stature. Tigers, Bears, Sharks... menacing
creatures. You wouldn't choose to name your team the 'Reading
Rabbits' for example. Saints, Warriors... symbolic stature.

I’d still say that the name itself is not an issue. I don’t
believe that anybody is demanding that Waikato change their
       name.
Exeter can still be the Chiefs and use Celtic imagery more in
       keeping with Devon’s history.
My Devonian friends are of the opinion that the club will
eventually have to bow to public pressure so why not get in
       front of the issue?
A positive early step is better PR than being forced into the
same change at a later date.

Who made WASPs the brand police? Surely this is a matter for
Exeter to decide what they want to be called?

And it’s a matter for others to decide how they react to
       Exeter’s decision.

I wonder if Wasps would be as vociferous if Exeter were
       favourites for relegation.

Didn't these war bonnets originate when people used to butcher,
mutilate, scalp and kill each other; a symbol of bravery and
       heroism?

Medals are a symbol of bravery and heroism and sometimes won by
acts of mutilating/killing other people. Not a lot of
       difference.

It might just be me but this thread has the distinct feel of
several on the Exeter SN board where one single poster appears
to feel so strongly about the issue that he answers just about
every post with a contrary view.
Hope we are not going to see multiple threads on the same topic
       here as well.
