War bonnets are sacred items in Native American culture, why on
earth would a club from Devon and their fans use / wear them?
It’s always been a rubbish nickname / imagery for a British
club, unless you can point me in the direction of the Navajo
community of the south west.

Granted, it's a bit of an odd one to choose but I also haven't
seen many bears in the Bristol area, Tigers in Leicestershire,
Sharks in Manchester or Muslim Arabs in North London!
But it's only a matter of time until modern society will force
the name change on them and probably then Saracens too.

That is taking the name of a small defenceless creatue and
appropriating it.

About the same amount as the Bears in Bristol or the large
Saracen community in North London
Strange they where called Chiefs back in the 30s adopted it
formally in 99 but now it’s a problem

I do find it interesting though that 'cultural appropriation' as
it's known, is only ever viewed from the outside in a negative
light and never as being an admiring choice of name/dress etc.
It's never seen as respectful homage. I don't think any Exeter
fans will have ever said anything nasty about Native Americans.
Not making a case one way or the other, just a point I find
interesting.

I’m not sure the Chiefs’ location is the issue. Not least as
I’ve not seen many complaints about Twickenham’s lack of 16th
Century Italians.
There have however been frequent calls for clubs worldwide not
to use the symbolism of indigenous peoples yet Exeter refuse to
change.
There is a group of Native Americans who appear to be genuinely
against the practice and clubs are now starting to listen.
Exeter had a chance to be at the forefront of this movement but
are now playing catch up.
Had they reacted sooner, Exeter could have been seen as
understanding and empathetic with minimal outlay to themselves.
They can still be the Chiefs but with more relevant imagery.

I’m sure there aren’t any Exeter fans who would have anything
disparaging to say about Native Americans. You raise a valid
point that some names and imagery can very much be in
admiration, except what has a club from Devon got to do with a
people 4 miles away? Like I said a war bonnet is sacred, it’s
not a fancy dress item.

Of course, Arlecchino is a culturally significant figure in
Commedia del'Arte and it's highly insensitive that since 1866 we
have been culturally appropriating his identity and bastardising
his costume, and all because we couldn't be bothered to change a
monogram.
I wouldn't be surprised if we get banned from visiting other
stadia until we rebrand as something less offensive
Of course, other clubs may be in trouble as well. There is no
history of actual tigers in Leicester. Northampton's players,
Dylan Hartley especially, have frequently been less than
Saintly. Newcastle's squad can't fly and Sale's are airbreathing
mammals and not cartilaginous killing machines.
Wasps, of course, are fine as they are definitely annoying black
and yellow striped b*stards.

Possibly a bit of a stretch, I don't think Harlequins are/were
exclusive to Italy.
The only thing that bothers me about the campaigning itself, not
necessarily the reasons behind it, is that I haven't seen or
heard of any Native Americans involved. (I could be wrong). That
doesn't make the cause not worthy but just makes those
campaigning look a certain way to everyone else.
