My information is that the clause is absolutely there and Bath
and Wasps are the clubs showing interest.
I don't think he'll leave, but why on God's earth are we
allowing these clauses? And they're only ever inserted if they
are intended to be used. To think otherwise is naive.

Probably because 'we' did'nt have a choice. At the time JK was
probably between a rock and a hard place as clubs were probably
willing to buy him out of his academy contract and pay him loads
as well. From a players perspective if you have a whip hand I'd
be looking to use it.
And sorry I don't agree with your last sentance. I would imagine
any player, if given the option/chance would have that clause in
his contract whether he wanted to exercise it or not just to
make his contract as flexible as possible.
FWIW I don't think he'll go either, he's obviously on a good
wage now and seems level headed enough to realise that he's
still work in progress with people around him who know that. If
he moved on my guess is that his new employers would'nt give him
much 'slack' which he probably knows as well

As a talented young player he's always going to have offers from
other clubs, contract or no contract. If we want him to stay
at Harlequins we've got to make it attractive financially and
from a sporting perspective.

I can imagine you have these clauses if not you might find the
player not wanting to sign. Think I am right in saying it was
a "long term" deal?? if so the player is going to want
protection. Lets say we change coach early in the deal and
bring in someone that does not work for him, does he then sit
out the rest of his deal unhappy or he activates the clause and
moves. Or do Quins turn around and say "no, we cannot put a
clause in like that" Smith replies "ok, thanks but no thanks"
all hypothetical of course but sounds reasonable to me.
Dont see how you can blame the club for that

I thought he was given a 6 figure salary. For a 19 year old he
was offered a very attractive package which he obviously
accepted. Will other clubs try and up the ante? Sad day for
bringing on young talent if clubs are tryng to break contracts
and/or outbidding each other so early in their careers.

If he chases the money it’ll be a mistake for his career coz
he’s not going to get more rugby anywhere else that can pay him
more.

Sad maybe, but how the world works.

I feel more BS speculation from the media.
Whilst I appreciate the irony of posting this on an internet fan
site I do think that the internet does not neccesarily do much
good for the world in many ways.

Yep, all good points above. He's no where near the finished
article yet and the top 4 clubs won't have him as their starting
10, he'll get more game time here and in an environment that
will support him. If he has a bad run, we'll be more
understanding if he goes elsewhere for big money then he'll get
less support.
He's a nice well balanced lad but then so was Cipriani at this
age and look what happened there!

I wouldn't compare Cipriani and Smith, they seem very different
and Cip's was 16 when his ego was inflated and the starting 10
by 19/20.
I think he is a prime example of what can go wrong if you dont
have people around you looking after you.
This is something Smith currently has at quins i would hope and
another reason he is almost not looking for a move.
I have said this before fisser has made a comment based on a
contract and nothing else really, all clubs would be interested
in a talent like Smith, that doesn't mean Smith is interested in
a move away from Quins.
