Cockers for England

Being predicted that Richard Cockerill is going to join Eddie
Jones coaching team. I wonder how long that will last for! Any
odds on first big bust up date? Am sure good for England but
what a combination!

The only ones with proven track records are Edwards and Farrell.
Borthwick has turned Tigers round but would be good to see
another season to see the longevity.
Right now it would be either Edwards or Farrell for me. But post
RWC a lot could change.

Shaun Edwards would be my break the bank pick. Borthwick had had
a good start but needs to be tested over a few seasons to see if
he’s a one trick pony or not.

I'd be happy enough with the risk of picking Borthwick. He's got
several years of international coaching experience already and
he turned Tigers around immediately, doing a better job than
anyone else has there for years.
I often hear that Edwards is not international head coach
material, although I've no idea if that's just a silly idea that
gained traction through repetition.
I'd be happy with Baxter too, as he comes across as a very
level-headed, common-sense guy, and he clearly knows his rugby.
Then again, I don't really care too much what nationality the
coach is.

As per other thread, forget Farrell. He has centrally contracted
players who play practically zero league rugby for their teams
and only really play in Europe and Internationals and he can
pick 13 players from one team and play to their style, he won't
get that with England so not proven for me at all.
Cockers as Interim maybe till post 2023 WC but it looks like
Eddie will be remaining so look for a coach who has a plan and a
system for after that and then pick the right players to play
it. If its a forward power game with territory and kicking the
leather off the ball then so be it but pick players who play
that system for their clubs. If its a more creative game plan
then don't pick those players from the former.
If that means no Quins wear the red rose then so be it but at
least we'd all be able to get behind the team.

coaches and an English style of play"
I'd like to know why the RFU are wedded to the idea of an
English coach. It is possibly that only someone who understands
the English club structure and how often that frustrates the
England head coach could possibly make a good fist of managing
England. But even Rob Baxter has no real experience of coaching
a country's team. And who else in England management does? I
mean the whole team, not just defence coach or attack coach.

How many of those were English and who is the most successful
after SCW (assuming RWC is the decider of the best)

I read that, coming after the RFU statement that the 6 nations
was a disappointment, to mean a coach that understands English
Rugby supporters i.e. taking the 6 nations seriously.

Why would he take it seriously? Teams and coaches are judged
primarily on the World Cup.
Gatland won far more Slams than Woodward did. So why has only
the latter been knighted?
On that note, among the Kiwi coaches that have been knighted are
Graham Henry and Steve Hansen. After they won world cups.
Ireland have won the 6N 4 times including 2 Slams. But they are
constantly reminded that they have never got past a World Cup
QF.
In 2018, Ireland did a Slam. Yet supporters of other nations
asked if they peaked too early.
I’d also guess that France’s Slam this year will be quickly
forgotten if they crash out of the world cup before the semis.
When it comes to France, the BBC podcast spoke about Laporte’s
record as a French coach. Both Care and Warburton were surprised
at how frequently his teams had won. To my mind, the surprise
was because Laporte is never seen as one of the great coaches in
history and I’d argue that’s because he didn’t win a World Cup.

I'm not sure knighthoods are relevant here!
We shouldn't be sacrificing the 6N in order to win the rwc. For
a start it doesn't actually help. Good teams win tournaments,
bad teams get thumped in them. Getting thumped with a deeply
confused gameplan put in place by no-mark coaches is not
beneficial to England.
South Africa and New Zealand would never do it this way. And
they know a thing or two about winning tournaments.
