Although there are rolling subs ie a prop can come back on

Not really … I’d argue we got it 100% right. As T-Bone said,
only Treadwell and Matthews have had decent top level careers.
Neither has won anything and neither is a test regular.
Merrick and Twomey have gone backwards since leaving Quins. You
could argue that their lack of progress was primarily
injury-related, but perhaps their medical situations were a
major factor in the club’s decision to let them go? If so, it
proved to be a good decision.
We let South go and after a brief period at Exeter with no
Premiership appearances, he was released and I’m not even sure
he’s playing now? In contrast, we kept Lamb and he’s looked a
lot better in the last 12 months or so - to the point that he’s
genuinely a Premiership standard lock now IMO.
We now have Tizard and Hammond coming through who we have high
hopes for. Tizard’s already looked good enough and I’m confident
Hammond will get there once he’s put on a bit of size (give him
whatever program Dino had).

It’s difficult to think of any players we’ve let go that have
gone on to better things. I can think of Mike Ross, but he
wasn’t academy. Kieran Treadwell maybe.

Launchbury really is the only obvious one and even then, he
admits he wasn’t fully focused on rugby at the point we let him
go.

David Strettle went to Salarycens and they had a run of well
funded good luck both domestically and in Europe.

I think there's a difference between "couldn't afford to keep /
offer what other sides could offer" and "didn't want to keep",
honestly. Strettle we'd have loved to have kept, ditto Ross.

I guess the one recent one that I felt was maybe one that 'got
away' was Sam Aspland-Robinson, who hasn't done much since
moving to Tigers, then got injured, then ended up on loan to
Coventry

Agreed, although I thought we were talking about academy players
we let go which doesn’t apply to Strettle and Ross.
Ibitoye is probably the most recent example of an academy
product we’d have liked to have kept, but the financial
situation with COVID definitely influenced that and again, he’s
hardly gone on to better things (definitely not so far anyway!).
