There is no way Smith should be having a long enforced rest if
he doesn't play, that's ridiculous. But the sort of nonsense
that rugby (and everyone else) seems to go in for these days.
Surely the point of the enforced rest is to recover following
since hard match time. If he doesn't have any why does he need a
12 week rest?

According to Daily Mail Lions have no dispensation to come
straight home (and have not asked for it) so as red list country
are flying to Dublin and then Jersey to meet up with their
families.

It does seem odd that players with minimal game time have the
same rest period as those that will have played in three tests
and warm-up games. However, I think we also need to remember
these players (not just Smith) have played a lot of rugby with
very little rest time.
Most players’ in our squad have had the last four weeks off
(more for non-internationals). Other Premiership clubs who
didn’t make the play-offs have had another couple of weeks more
than this too. Smith has gone straight from the final to
training and playing with England, immediately followed by
flying out to SA with the Lions. He needs some time off both
from a physical and mental POV and from a bigger picture
perspective, I’d rather give him that now than risk him being
injured or burning out.

It just not game time but training, travelling and a 24/7 rugby
focus. Sometimes players need downtime to get away from the
formal rugby environment. This doesn't mean they're not training
but just doing their own thing.
