Neil Francis racially abusive about Marcus Smith

He was asked in the Irish Independent podcast about him being
included in the Lions and he responded with:
"They couldn’t throw him in. A Harlequins out-half with a David
Beckham haircut and an Oompa Loompa tan… you just couldn’t throw
him in.”
The comments on the podcast have since being edited out. But who
on earth thought it was okay to have it originally included in
the first place.

I've heard the clip as it's doing the rounds on Twitter. Totally
disgusting to hear. Apparently the club have already asked for
an apology as have the Lions.

As well as being racist it was just downright bizarre. You can't
play him because he plays for Quins, isn't white and has big
hair. Nothing to do with his inexperience or anything, just his
appearance and the club he plays for.

As I remember, David Becham also had a David Beckham haircut and
(probably) an oompa loompa tan. England usually picked him and
it didn't seem to do them much harm. Bizarre comments...

The bloke is a complete clown. He has previous too:
On 16 February 2014, Francis sparked controversy when he claimed
that “gay people do not have any interest in sport” and that
“only a tiny percentage are actively involved in professional
sports of any kind".
How he's still employed by the Irish Independent is baffling.
Also a bit rich, considering Marcus has already won more in his
short career then Francis did.

It will be claimed as Rugby banter, but it defo has racial
connotations. He should be ashamed of himself.

HARLEQUINS HAVE RELEASED THE BELOW STATEMENT REGARDING OFFENSIVE
COMMENTS MADE ABOUT FLY-HALF MARCUS SMITH
Harlequins is disgusted by racist comments made by
Independent.ie columnist Neil Francis on the publication's rugby
podcast, The Left Wing, on July 14 about Harlequins, England,
and British and Irish Lions fly-half Marcus Smith.
The Club firmly believes that there is no room for racism in any
part of society, let alone professional sport.
Harlequins await a written reply from The Independent.ie
regarding this matter.
