European Champions Cup draw
DIR By: dr_miles
Date: July 20, 2021, 6:16 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Details below, but I believe we will either be playing Cardiff
or Glasgow and Castres or Montpellier. Mind you, I'm not sure
that I have got my head around this correctly!
As previously communicated, the pool draw for the 2021/22
Heineken Champions Cup will be staged in Lausanne, Switzerland
on Wednesday 21 July at 12.00 (UK and Irish time).
The draw will be live-streamed on HeinekenChampionsCup.com and
the 24 clubs which have qualified for next season’s tournament
from Europe’s three leading professional leagues will know their
pool stage opponents once the formalities are concluded.
For the purposes of the event, which will be run on the same
lines as last season, the clubs will first be placed into four
tiers based on their rankings, before being drawn into two pools
of 12 – Pool A and Pool B. Clubs from the same league in the
same tier will not be drawn into the same pool.
The number 1 and number 2 ranked clubs from each league will be
in Tier 1, the number 3 and number 4 ranked clubs will be in
Tier 2, the number 5 and 6 ranked clubs will be in Tier 3, and
the number 7 and number 8 ranked clubs will be Tier 4.
The Tier 1 and the Tier 4 clubs which have been drawn in the
same pool, but which are not in the same league, will play one
another home and away during the pool stage, as will the Tier 2
and Tier 3 clubs which have been drawn in the same pool, but
which are not in the same league.
Click HERE for a detailed explanation of the Heineken Champions
Cup pool draw
For example, recent winners of the coveted Heineken Champions
Cup and TOP 14 double, Stade Toulousain, will be in Tier 1 and
will be drawn against either Bath Rugby or Wasps, and against
either Cardiff Rugby or Glasgow Warriors from Tier 4.
Similarly, Bristol Bears in Tier 2 will be drawn against either
PRO14 qualifiers, Scarlets or Ospreys, and against either ASM
Clermont Auvergne or Stade Français Paris from Tier 3.
Once the draw has been concluded, EPCR will begin work on the
fixture schedule with an announcement of exact dates, venues,
kick-off times and TV coverage to follow as soon as practicable.
The 2021/22 tournament will be played over nine weekends with
four rounds of matches in the pool stage starting in December.
The eight highest-ranked clubs from each pool will qualify for
the knockout stage which will consist of a Round of 16 on a home
and away basis, quarter-finals and semi-finals, with the final
in Marseille on 28 May 2022.

Not quite, we'll be playing one of Cardiff and Glasgow, and one
of Castres and Montpellier

Ah ok, home and away against one of the rainbow cup (or whatever
it's called these days) and one of Top 14 teams.
Cardiff and Castres would be the best result then...

But we also play one of Leinster, Munster and one or Stade
Toulousain or Stade Rochelais - with Exeter playing the other
pairing.
But we only need to be in the top eight in the pool to progress.
Confused, you will be after the next episode of Soap.

I don't think so. There's only 4 games in the pool stage for
each team - home and away against 2 opponents.

Correct. There's only home and away games against {Cardiff or
Glasgow} and {Castres or Montpellier}. Then it's into the Round
of 16 where it's the top 8 from each of the pools go through.
Those games are home & away, then QF, SF & F.

It is a bit weird.
It's easier if you look at it after the two pools have been
drawn and just consider 2 tiers, since all matches are between
two tiers, i.e. 1 & 4 or 2 & 3, what applies to the teams in 1 &
4 also applies to those in 2 & 3.
So, say Pool A has Quins, Leinster and Toulouse from Tier 1 and
Bath, Cardiff and Castres from Tier 4, the fixtures would be
Quins v Cardiff x2 (home and away)
Quins v Castres x2
Leinster v Bath x2
Leinster v Castres x2
Toulouse v Bath x2
Toulouse v Cardiff x2
So, everyone plays 4 matches.
Add in the tier 2 & 3 matches in the same fashion and then order
the pool according to points, tries, points for etc. - I don't
know what they are using in what order after points.
It favours Tier 1 teams quite heavily since they are only
playing the Tier 4 teams (and vice versa). The Tier 2 & 3
matches in theory will be much tougher.
Having said that, obviously seeding can never be perfect as it's
based on last years performance.

I really want us to give this a crack, if not make it our No.1
priority. I think the Prem will be tough and Top 4 will be a
very good season. So focus on Europe and get that trophy as
well.
