The 50:22 rule is an version of the 40:20 in Rugby League. I
have to say I think it has made RL much more watchable, because
it gives a role to tactical kicking that was not really evident
before. Just a personal view, but one formed from watching RL
       over the last 5-10 years.

From what I can see, the 50:22 rule basically says "Players in
their own half may attempt a penalty kick to touch whenever they
       wish"?

as long as it bounces first..

No, it's a completely different skill. It has to bounce out, so
there's a different skill involved - you can't just hoof it for
the stands, you have to find some space, kick short and judge it
to bounce out before it stops or goes touch in goal.

It's because this will be in open play, rather than a penalty
that this should make a difference. Teams will need to start
dropping more players back in defence to field potential
"50:22"s, making more space in the rush defensive line further
up field. Remember that the ball will have to bounce infield
before crossing the touchline, so there's also the chance for
fast wingers/centres from the attacking side to challenge a
defender for the ball as well. The idea is to create more space
to attack at the advantage line and also more options for teams
to create breaks further upfield by tactical and aggressive
       kicking, rather than simple kick-tennis.

Fair points from Fred and poorfour. I'll wait to see how it
       works out in reality. :)

Interesting piece on it in Rugby World. Two really big
       takeaways:
       1) from the Australian trials, attacking teams with a strong
scrum, a strong running game and strong kickers were benefitting
the most. Setting a defensive backline from a scrum against a
team who could run and kick was the most challenging aspect. I
wonder if we know of a team with all those characteristics?
       2) Stuart Barnes hates it. Therefore it must by definition be
       good.

World Rugby have now confirmed that the 50:22 law does not apply
       to kick-offs and restarts.
