New Laws for next season

In case anyone had missed it, this is from The Breakdown in the
Grauniad:

Along with a goal-line drop out rather than a scrum when the
ball is held up over the try line, it is hoped it will encourage
teams to do more than seek close-range contact and also decrease
defensive line speed, which in turn could have welfare benefits.
Just as positive, potentially, are three trials focusing
specifically on reducing injuries at the breakdown, following
detailed evaluation by a specialist breakdown working group
whose members have included Eddie Jones, the New Zealand coach
Ian Foster, the All Blacks captain Sam Cane, the former Ireland
coach Joe Schmidt and leading referees. The first will involve
stricter sanctions for clearouts which target the lower limbs.
The second will outlaw the practice of three or more players
forming pre-bound pods and the third will tighten the definition
of ‘latching’ with any player binding on to a teammate forced to
stay on their feet and enter through ‘the gate.’
The quicker the speed of ball from the rucks, with any luck, the
more attacking space there should be. If deemed successful the
trials could be fully adopted into law next year, just over a
year prior to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.[/quote]
I think the 50:22 is going to have the bigger affect on the game
as watched.

I was thinking that both of these rules are well-suited to
Quins' style of play. Marcus's eye for space (plus the fact that
we have decent kickers across the backline) and our broken field
running mean these will create opportunities for Quins - even if
it reduces Joe and Wilco's ability to demolish opposing packs on
5m.

I think the drop out isn't going to have as big an affect
anyway, as it's only for when the ball is held up over the line.
The close range pick&go will still happen, and 5m scrums can
still be a potent weapon if you do them right.

In the trials down South, defending teams started dragging ball
carriers over the goal-line to hold them up if they thought they
had a good position on the ball. It certainly makes pick&go’s
more risky.
Of course, this opens up a defensive risk if you drag the ball
carrier over the line and they manage to get the ball free.

It should also create more opportunities for the other teams to
rack up more tries against us.

They'll have opportunities - the question is whether they can
take them. I'd feel more comfortable about Quins defending a
goal line dropout than a repeated battering on the 5m line.
And I think we are more likely to see and exploit space than
some of the more regimented teams. Marcus's most distinctive
skill is his ability to move the defence out of position (and I
don't think anyone in the game does it better), and I can see
him being able to spot and exploit any slight misalignment or
mistiming among our opponents' back threes.
Without having pondered it too much, I suspect the best
opportunities will come during the transition from kicking to
running - a loose kick in a bout of kick tennis that allows the
fielding team to run forces the defenders to decide who to leave
back and who to bring up into the line, and that will either
leave space on the field or create a moment when there's a
shortage of defenders at the back. We've got the running threats
to force a team to commit to a run defence, but enough vision
from Marcus, Marchant and Green to be able to spot when there's
undefended space and capitalise on it on the hoof. Not many
other teams have shown that sort of game today.
Even Bristol's transitional attack is based more around
Radradra's ability to run at the smallest gaps rather than a
kicking game.
I'd not be at all surprised to see a continuation of this
season: we will concede a lot of points, but we have the talent
to score even more.

Will be interesting to see how much effect the latching/goalline
laws will have on teams such as Exeter.
But I agree that the 50:22 variant will likely have the most
effect on the game overall.
I think few would disagree that there is already too much
kicking and it could encourage more but I'm not sure that's the
case if teams are set up to defend it. Generally a kick aimed
behind the opposition's back three is quite flat meaning the
chasers have less time to close down the space so will teams
want to concede possession in that way?
But could it also make teams more likely to kick away turnover
ball with the aim of getting a lineout in the opposition 22?

Can you kick for touch with a goal line dropout?
50:22 totally plays into Exeters hands.
Not breaking players knees in the jackal position is a good
move. Why haven't they strengthened the deterrent for flying
into rucks at a prone opponent and also "sealing off"?
I thought the referees were already telling the attackers not to
bind before tapping the ball in 5 metre pens?

I think the current defensive tactic is akin to Ali's tactics
against Foreman: let them score as many tries as they can until
they have blown themselves out, and then destroy them with
superior late game fitness.
Sadly only Bristol have had the good grace to follow the game
plan.
