I think we're all just a bit leary of going overboard having
been burned with the Gustard experience. However, new guy joins
the Harlequins family, let's give him a big Harlequins welcome.
We have to have faith. I haven't lost faith in the management to
pick the guy they think will be best for the club. I'm hoping
they also learned something from the last coach, but honestly
who can actually say they saw that coming? You can say you never
liked Gustard because of his association with team Voldemort,
but I don't recall anyone saying his management was going to
cause us to malfunction.
Anyway, welcome Tabai Matson. Here's hoping for a long and
fruitful partnership!

Absolutely Dok, give the guy a chance.
Laurie & Billy have worked with the coaches to see what they
want and how they can be complemented and this is the decision
they've come to as a group. He's used to the All Black attacking
mentality so he won't be making big tweaks or changing our 'DNA'
so let's see how it goes.
Welcome Tabai and feel free to bring a good experienced NZ
hooker with you.

I think we need a bit of perspective on Paul Gustard. Some of
the comments here would lead you to believe that nothing he did
for the club was good. But that's not the case. For one thing,
he delivered an immediate improvement over where we were when
John Kingston left.
For another, he had a big hand in building the squad we have
today - one that won the Premiership, and yet still has plenty
of room for improvement. One that has replaced almost all of our
2012 generation, a group of players I had thought were
irreplaceable.
For a third, when the coaches and players have spoken about him
and the decision to let him go, they have consistently said that
he improved them as coaches and players, even when they didn't
have to.
Against that, you have to set that he was trying to impose a
playing style that didn't get the most out of the squad. That
doesn't make him a bad person or a bad coach - but it does make
him one who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes
things don't work out.
My guess is that as a first time head coach he was trying to
take too much responsibility for the style of play, and that was
causing tension when it wasn't working. Both players and coaches
have spoken of needing to take accountability for the
performance in the wake of his departure.
And it worked. We have the sort of group of players who have
flourished when the chips were down.
However, to do that has put a strain on the coaches: to fill the
gap left by Gustard's departure, Millard and the coaching group
have had to take on his responsibilities and drop some of the
others. Six jobs into five people won't go, at least not
indefinitely.
In choosing a replacement for Gustard, the club have had an
unusual problem to solve, but several advantages over the usual
situation where you're replacing a coach. They weren't looking
for someone to fix something that's broken, but someone who
could complement a setup that's working. It's clear from what
we've heard of the process that Matson knows he has to work with
the existing coaching group, and that they all had a say in
whether they thought he was a fit.
Bringing in any coach is a roll of the dice. There's no reliable
indicator of whether a coach will be successful with a
particular group ahead of time. But this time around, Quins have
had the luxury of time and of looking for someone who can fit in
with a winning formula, rather than someone who can create one
from scratch.
The bar for Matson is different than for most new head coaches:
he needs to not break something that's working. I think we
should have a little confidence that the club can select someone
who can at least do that.

I am pretty sure that all players and coaches who have been
asked have said that this set up was special but not sustainable
in the long term.
It sounds like Tabai is going to add an extra dimension and some
fresh ideas to the fantastic work done by the other coaches.
That is a good thing.
Laurie has proven to be a very good decision maker in most
things thus far. I am sure he is making a good decision to help
us move on and be even more competitive and an ever-present in
the top 4.
Welcome Tabai, this is a special club. You will love it here!

I think the biggest disappointment after 2012 was that we failed
to build on the success, & in David Ellis we had the wrong man
in place at the top. This time around I feel way more confident
in Laurie Dalrymple, & by bringing in someone like Matson, we
can continue to build & improve. Matson does have experience of
life within the Canterbury & Crusaders set up, & I've always
dreampt & hoped we could someday be the English club most likely
to replicate their style, & that has to be a big positive. There
seems to be a little confusion about his time with Bath, &
although I felt a little unsure when his name was linked, when
you look at it more closely, it kind of makes sense. He has to
be a better choice than Kingston & Gustard were surely? Hope it
works out & welcome.
